| About Anthony: I am an A-Level student with impressive GCSE grades. In German, I achieved 100% in my GCSE, and 99% in recent A-Level trial exams. I am predicted 5 A's at A Level. |
Teaching Experience: I have had teaching experience through cadets, where I instruct cadets on a weekly basis. I have had a 100% pass rate in cadets proficiency examination, which include map reading & navigation, basic physics, as well as military knowledge. |
Tutoring Approach: I hope to identify problems a pupil may have and target these problems thoroughly, helping to boost confidence and understanding. I will also aim to push pupils, to make sure that they are always ahead. In German, I aim to help pupils with grammar and vocabulary problems, whilst also helping with speaking skills. In maths, I want to help pupils understand concepts, thus allowing them to understand problems. Rather than simply giving an answer, I would like to help explain to pupils how things work and why, so they can apply theory to practise easily |

| About Kimberley: I am a 26-year-old woman and enjoy a variety of hobbies including photography, reading, snowboarding, films and scrapbooking. I am approachable and friendly, and interested in tutoring both young people and adults with an aim of my own self-development as well as helping other people. I believe that language education is important in today's multinational arena and I am happy to help others learn such important skills, but at their own pace. I myself have been a languages student from the ages of 10 until 22, and am aware of the challenges that a language-learner can face. I have worked in Paris as a translator, and also studied for 6 months at a French University. I also speak French on a day-to-day basis at work. As you can read from my teaching experience, I have also taught English as a foreign language to Chinese students. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught English as a foreign language in China - at an Aviation University. The aim of this language education was to permit the students to study in Australia/USA for a year in order to complete their formal training and degree. I also held discusssion groups with adults who could speak intermediate/advanced English, in order to practice and improve their language and expressional skills - as well as help them understand the differences between English spoken in different countries. Students were of various levels - from not even basic knowledge, to a high conversational standard. I have covered many subjects, prepared lessons, used many resources, held discussions, and prepared/graded exams and homework. Finally, I have experience in private tuition of high-school age students on a one-to-one basis. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that learning another language should be fun and not only restricted to books, writing, or a classroom - in my past teaching experience, I have encouraged my students to choose their own path of learning by helping them suggest subjects to learn, talk about etc. I also think that learning about another country's culture as well as language is both important and interesting. I am happy to meet needs such as conversation preference, help with particular grammar, and help find resources in order to practice skills further. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Abimbola: My name is Abimbola Osho but you can call me BB. I'm a 21 year old girl who recently graduated from Imperial College where I studied Mechanical Engineering. I'm a fun yet efficient person who takes pride in her school work and I am currently awaiting admission into a PhD program. I have always wanted to be a teacher however, my parents wouldn't allow me as they feel it isn't a lucrative business. I have no criminal record and you can be rest assured that you will receive top results if I tutor you. |
Teaching Experience: I am the oldest of five children and anytime I am back home, I always tutor my siblings in all their subjects. During my A' levels, I was the smartest student in the boarding house and as a result of this, a lot of the other students used to ask me for help with their school work. In fact one student in particular I helped him get a B in his Maths A' Levels where he was predicted a D. During university, I did a stint with University Tutors a tutoring agency set up by university students. However I was forced to drop out as I couldn't balance it with school work. |
Tutoring Approach: In my opinion, no subject is difficult and no one is dumb. With the little experience I have, I find that the first thing is to grab the tutees attention. To do this, I usually find whatever their interested in and apply it to the problem. For instance, my brother is very interested in sports so I usually use a football analogy to explain Maths to him. If this method doesn't work, I just take it back to the basics and build up from there. I also believe in having a lesson plan which should be adhered to. However, I am very flexible. |

| About Hazel: I am currently studying BA geography at Leeds university. My A level grades were AAB in Geography, English language and English literature. At school I was in the gifted and talented club, which I was selected for being excellent in geography. |
Teaching Experience: I have previously tutored family friends in geography and English. I have little tutoring experience, but my excellent academic record makes me very suitable. As a result I am willing to charge very little. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is to identify the pupil's weaknesses in the subject and to work with the pupil to overcome this. I also think it is important to acknowledge and emphasize the pupil's strengths in the subject in order to give them the confidence they may be lacking within other areas of that subject. |

| About Catrin: My name is Catrin Williams and I am 23 years old. I come from a strong and varied educational background, which has included me achieving three grade A's at A level in 2004. I studied English Literature, Biology, Chemistry and completed an English Language A.S. to grade A standard. More recently I have achieved a first class honours degree at Keele University in English. I am currently studying part time for a Master's Degree in Children's Literature at a University in London and hope to pursue a career in English University lecturing. I am originally from Wales, but have lived in Stoke since 2004, and work as an Admin Assistant in the area. I live with my partner and younger sister and my beautiful dog Sammy in a little house in the Stoke on Trent area. |
Teaching Experience: Throughout my time at University I have been tutoring and providing advice to people in High School and College regarding English. Most recently this included my helping a mature student to achieve a Grade B at English G.C.S.E, despite English being his second language and his achieving a U the first time round. I am now helping him to complete an English Literature A.S. I have worked on a voluntary basis as a proof reader at University and have helped many people studying for English G.C.S.E. with their reading and writing skills within a classroom setting. |
Tutoring Approach: Whilst I am very interested and passionate about English, I realise that this is not the case for everyone and that many people find English a difficult and frustrating subject. I am a very patient and understanding tutor who is very enthusiastic about English and am keen to transfer some of my enthusiasm and understanding! I have a good base of knowledge regarding English language and English Literature and feel I could help anyone to further their knowledge in these subjects. I am also confident in assisting people with their reading and writing skills at all levels and I can explain topics in a clear and concise manner. I will also research any books/plays etc alongside you, so you do not feel lonely and isolated. Rather than teaching a whole course from scratch I feel it would be most beneficial for the student for sessions to study solely areas of their subject or course which are difficult to them, and we can rectify these areas together quickly and easily, without breaking the bank! |

| About Janet: I teach History, Politics (and also sometimes Psychology and Sociology) in a local secondary school but work only part-time and so have spare time to take up some private tuition work. I am patient, friendly and approachable and I also have three children of my own (two of school age) and so have a wide experience of the problems that students can experience during their education. I really enjoy teaching and like being able to offer my students one-to-one attention. |
Teaching Experience: I have been teaching for 24 years, mainly in secondary schools but also in Further Education where my students have ranged from 16 to 60 years. I have done private tuition work and also a little university teaching when I was a postgraduate student. I have taught History, Politics, Psychology and Sociology up to AS/A2 level and I have a great deal of experience of helping students prepare for the requirements of these examinations. I have also taught English up to GCSE level. |
Tutoring Approach: I aim to go over the course content and help the student to develop a good and profound understanding of the topics studied and try to get him/her fully involved in each session so that he/she can build up the confidence to be able to tackle examination questions independently and confidently. |

| About Elizabeth: I am a gap year student who is going to York University in 2008 to study history and politics. I can offer private tuition in history, politics, geography and law, in preparation for GCSE, AS and A level exams. I am an organised, committed, reliable and enthusiastic individual who enjoys working with children and young adults, helping them to develop their understanding and interest in a variety of subjects. |
Teaching Experience: For several years whilst I was at school I was an enthusiastic volunteer for Fun Fizzical, a movement and dance group organized by Lewisham council for disabled children and their siblings. As a volunteer, part of my responsibility was to teach and help children to develop their basic language and numeracy skills, whilst ensuring that a stimulating and exciting environment was created for them. I found it a very rewarding and humbling experience, which taught me valuable skills such as patience, sensitivity and commitment, whilst developing my skills in teamwork and communication. In addition to this during my work experience, where I worked at the Tower of London and Hampton Court, I conducted independent historical research, which I then used to plan educational sessions, geared to school children, of various ages and abilities. It was necessary to ensure that the material collected was not only historically accurate but also easy to understand and enjoyable to learn about, helping the children to develop an interest in different periods of history. |
Tutoring Approach: Whilst tutoring I would pay particular attention to the needs of each student, and tailor their study courses to best meet their needs and wishes. My approach to tutoring emphasises clarity, flexibility, and an enthusiasm for learning, within an informal and relaxed yet structured and interactive environment. I would encourage students to think imaginatively and challenge themselves academically, encouraging debate and broadening their horizons. This would not only help to improve a child's examination technique but also their academic development. |

| About Tomasz: I am a native Polish. I studied Physics and Astronomy at University of Wroclaw, Poland - speciality: physic teacher. During my studies I worked as a journalist for student's monthly mag and I was writing IT related articles for another title. I came to Scotland over two years ago. At the start I was driving lorries, but due to the demand for polish I becomed a polish tutor in my spare time. At the moment I study languages and Central and Eastern European studies at University of Glasgow. |
Teaching Experience: In Poland I had a work placements as a physics teacher in secondary school. I was also tutoring in various range of subjects: from physics and math through the engineering mechanics to Polish and guitar playing. After I came to Scotland people around me started to ask for a Polish lessons. I agreed to try and I found it really interesting, so I decided to go for that more seriously - I did some reading, bought books and contacted other teachers for advice. I am also doing some translations from time to time - from school and law documents to some specialized texts related to transport industry. |
Tutoring Approach: I find language tutoring really fascinating - I think it's not only about language but it's about way of thinking. I am studying French, where I learn things new for me, and Czech, where I have opportunity to observe what difficulties are encountered by English speakers when learning a Slavic language, and I find both experienced useful when working with my own students. As I was working for years as a journalist, I have more practical then philological approach to language. I am using few books as a base to work with my students (from some basic courses through classic university textbooks by prof. Miodunka to modern well recognized coursebook "Hurra!") but I tend to use also every-day language by working with the newspapers, books or even some movies. My goal is to teach not only the plain language but all cultural aspects which are going with it. |

| About Mairi: I shall arrange this section in bullet points for ease of reading : * Australian - wonderful sense of humour * genuinely enjoy playing a part in children's learning. * 35 years old but young at heart * love learning new things - curious and inquisitive * approachable personality * very patient with young children * reliable * enjoy being outdoors and active (a real challenge with Northern Hemisphere weather) * well travelled * fun loving, bubbly and talkative |
Teaching Experience: As a qualified, reliable and highly skilled classroom teacher, I am eager to use my experience to help those children who would benefit from a more personalized learning program. I qualified in Australia (2001), teaching children from four through to nine years of age. Although the curriculum in Australia differs greatly from the National Curriculum, the ways in which young children learn best, does not. During 2005-2007, I taught in British International Schools in Moscow and Istanbul. I gained invaluable knowledge and skills in teaching children how to read and write in the English language. More recently(2007- July 2008) I have been supply teaching in various primary schools across London, and as such have acquired a broad knowledge of the National Curriculum Guidelines throughout Key Stage 1 and 2. Currently, I am supply teaching in Birmingham and loving it! |
Tutoring Approach: I believe there are multiple ways in which can children learn, just as there are multiple intelligences. Every child has the ability to learn, yet the rate at which they acquire knowledge and skills will vary incredibly. Although this difference in abilities is acknowledged in most classrooms, unfortunately it can not always be addressed in school time. As an energetic and creative tutor, I would strive to make every session not only enjoyable, but memorable. I would achieve this through a variety of activities that would :- 1. reinforce and compliment their school learning and agreed targets; 2. encourage children to use all of their senses; 3. promote the value of play; 4. demonstrate the relevance of all learning in everyday life. As a result of many years of teaching experience, I appreciate the special relationship that exists between educators and parents. I view this relationship as important as the repoire between tutor and child. As such, I would welcome information relevant to a child's personal interests and factors effecting their ability to learn. |

Teaching Experience: 1) Jan-Nov 2000, Mathematics and English language tutor, private client. Students aged 11 and 13 sitting the GCE Intenational O' Level examinations. 2) Jan 1998 - Jul 2001, Islamic studies teacher, Haydari Madressah, Nairobi, Kenya. Islamic studies teacher at a night school in Nairobi, Kenya teaching 8 year old students. Class of 22 students. 3) Sep 2001 - Jun 2006, Belgrave School, Leicester, UK. Subjects taught there were Mathematics, English Language and English Literature. Class of 10 students. 4) Sep 2001 - 2006, Anysubject Ltd. private tutoring agency, Stamford, UK. I thereafter joined Anysubject Ltd. and worked with them between 2001 and 2006. This involved giving private tuition to GCSE students at their homes. I had clients in Leicester, Southampton, Cardiff and Bedford. During this time I taught Science in addition to other subjects mentioned above. 5) Aug 2007 - present, Alpha tutors Ltd. and Personal tutors Ltd, Cheshire, UK. |
Tutoring Approach: I offer just one hour introductory session initially to get to know the student and parent/guardian. This is an opportunity for you to ask questions about me, for me to provide you with my references and qualification details and for me to take the student through a few guide questions to recognise the level at which they are. I can then judge, according to your expectations, how many lessons and what duration per week/fortnight the student will require to reach that expectation. Eg. from General level to Credit level at Standard grade. Once completed you can then have a think over the lesson and engage in a conversation with your child if they feel confident enough to have me as their tutor and mentor. Once this is settled we can go ahead with further tuition. |

| About Sarah: I have been teaching English in an outer-London secondary school for 4 years and have management responsibilities within the department. My main role is to share good practise amongst other teachers and demonstrate how to inspire young people and think outside of the box. I have an excellent relationship with those whom I teach and this is the first step to ensuring that they are successful. I am available to help with homework, coursework or to help develop reading and writing skills in preparation for the SAT and GCSE examinations. I am extremely flexible and although tutoring is a 'job', my primary objective is to help your child reach their full potential. |
Teaching Experience: 4 years in an outer-London secondary school teaching English at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. I have run and assisted in summer schools for gifted and talented pupils throughout the past 5 summers. I have also written the programme for 'booster SAT lessons' and hosted these on Saturday mornings at an Essex secondary school. |
Tutoring Approach: Tutoring is not about doing the work for a child in order that they may pass it off as their own. Instead it is about helping them to be more confident in their abilities and making learning enjoyable. Students need to understand explicitly what is expected for them to achieve each grade/level and they need to be encouraged to grade their own work. By doing this they can determine for themselves how they can improve and set personal targets. As a tutor, my role is to guide the pupil, make learning accessible and, where possible, fun. |

| About Abbie: Current university student, studying Information Systems Analysis (Computer Science/IT) in Bristol. I was brought up in the South of Spain, studying at an International College, following the UK curriculum. |
Teaching Experience: Although I have no professional experience in this field, during my AS and A-level years I spent my "free periods" tutoring younger children within the school. This included helping young children learn to read, acting as a teacher's help in classes, and taking some GCSE IT classes for students needing extra help. I have also taken on the responsibility of "Science is Fun" days held annually at the school. |
Tutoring Approach: I've always found that you learn best from the teacher's you can actually connect with. Each student will have their own way of learning to their best ability, it's the tutor's position to discover which way is best for the student. |
