About Jeff:
I am a 27 year old Chartered Accountant, I studied Mathematics and Statistics at University of Edinburgh obtaining an Upper Second with Honours. I will be starting my PGCE teaching course in September of this year and I am looking to gain some experience in tutoring and understanding any issues pupils are having so that I am better prepare for when I teach formally in a classroom environment.

Teaching Experience:
I have tutored for one tranch of exams in 2002. I had 4 pupils, 3 of which did very well, the other pupil did not have the motivation to study to the level of what was required to pass.

It was a great experience to help pupils out and even that one experience has taught me ways to be a more effective tutor.

Tutoring Approach:
The only way to learn and improve at Maths or Accountancy is to practise. Doing past paper exercises and redoing them until you have the technique off by heart. My approach would be to have pupils to sit a past paper examination under exam conditions so that I could ascertain what areas of the curriculum they are weakest in and then focus on that, probably setting 'homework' in these areas.

I am also patient as I accept that many pupils do not get Maths immediately unlike the lucky few, including myself.

Teaching Experience:
I started tutoring whilst doing my A-levels where I tutored several children in the main school my sixth form was attached to and enabled them to improve their grades over the course of their GCSE year, several from D to A grades.
I continued with some tutoring during my undergraduate studies and enjoy the results when a tutee improves their knowledge of their subject with my help. I am looking to continue this at Durham University and hope to help several tutees in the area.

Tutoring Approach:
I find that it is most constructive to ask the tutee what they feel they are struggling with first off the bat and address these immediate concerns through methods of different explaining methods and going through exercises with them, as once these are dealt with they will expose other gaps in their knowledge or other areas they do not feel comfortable with.
I also am a huge advocate of teaching good exam technique as this can really make the difference between the higher grades and will pass on my knowledge to my tutees.
