| About Alexandra: I am a DPhil (PhD) student in philosophy at the University of Susex. Previously, I studied for a Master's Degree in Political Theory at the London School of Economics and Political Science (L.S.E.), and a BA in Media Studies. Given my interdisciplinary background, I have a flexible and open-minded and creative attitude to study, all the while ensuring targets are met and progress is made, regardless of training or level. I am multilingual and can relate to a variety of ethnic backgrounds, given my teaching and own immigration experience. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught students of different levels and abilites and have always have great success in helping them achieve their goals. I have worked with my last student, a Media Studies undergraduate, towards her final -year dissertation, which achieved a first class grade, despite the provisional fail grade before private tuition started. I have maintained a friendly, relaxed relationship with former students. I have also taught my younger brother consistently throughout the years. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe education is one of the most important endeavours in life. Given this, a passion for personal learning, and a committment to helping students achieve success, I am particularly fond of teaching. The interaction and creativity involved in exploring new ideas and ways to see the world means I relish the teaching experience, whereby horizons are expanded mutually. I am constantly developing new skills and approaches to engage students on both professional and personal levels. |

View Oliver's Profile
Availability: Weekends / Weekdays (evenings)
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Oliver: I am a really friendly, reliable and easygoing tutor. Languages are both my passion and my talent - and I teach both reluctant, unconvinced learners of foreign languages as well as the determined and motivated linguists amongst us. My French and German skills are first-rate: whatever the level, from absolute beginners to undergraduate finalists I am happy teaching grammar, conversation, written language, translation and comprehension- either for a curriculum or for pleasure. I can also support those who wish to learn a language for business or professional reasons |
Teaching Experience: Extensive experience teaching to various learners in various settings: - in German schools: teaching English and French - adults: teaching conversational French and German; German for business - GCSE/GCE: tutoring in French, German and English as a foreign language I'm experienced teaching all levels, including absolute beginners and those wishing to 'refresh'. |
Tutoring Approach: I always emphasise a firm grasp of grammar (specifically verbs) as the essential foundation for learning a language successfully. But there's no need to go overboard - it's all about balance. So whatever text or topic we're looking at, we'll make sure we're comfortable with the building blocks of the language, and then enjoy learning useful and stylish language. Some of this just requires learning - but it really doesn't have to be tedious or burdensome. Just enough depending on what you want to use your language for. My style is relaxed and informal - I want to enjoy teaching, so it's important that you enjoy learning with me. I'll try to always introduce you to interesting words and phrases and explain Grammar and syntactical structures as plainly as possible. I'll spend quite a lot of time polishing up your accent, too. You'll enjoy using the language more, and be more confident, if you have a bit of verve and gusto when it comes to pronunciation. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Jeff: I am a 27 year old Chartered Accountant, I studied Mathematics and Statistics at University of Edinburgh obtaining an Upper Second with Honours. I will be starting my PGCE teaching course in September of this year and I am looking to gain some experience in tutoring and understanding any issues pupils are having so that I am better prepare for when I teach formally in a classroom environment. |
Teaching Experience: I have tutored for one tranch of exams in 2002. I had 4 pupils, 3 of which did very well, the other pupil did not have the motivation to study to the level of what was required to pass. It was a great experience to help pupils out and even that one experience has taught me ways to be a more effective tutor. |
Tutoring Approach: The only way to learn and improve at Maths or Accountancy is to practise. Doing past paper exercises and redoing them until you have the technique off by heart. My approach would be to have pupils to sit a past paper examination under exam conditions so that I could ascertain what areas of the curriculum they are weakest in and then focus on that, probably setting 'homework' in these areas. I am also patient as I accept that many pupils do not get Maths immediately unlike the lucky few, including myself. |

| About Marie: I enjoy reading, travelling and listening to music. |
Teaching Experience: I have nine years teaching experience both in the UK and the USA. I have been tutoring on a one to one basic for six years. I am currently teaching GCSE and A' level English in a Further Education College. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to one to one tutoring is to ascertain the learners weaknesses and strengths. By so doing I am able to meet the learners need by focusing on improving the learners weakness. In addition I use the learners strengths as a means of motivation and encouragement. for example, if the learner is a competent reader but unable to spell of write fluently, I encourage the learner by showing them how well they are able to read and then use this to encourage improving spelling or writing skills. I also encourage learners to be independent and use their own initiative in discovering learning opportunities. |

This first hand skill of working with children of school age has made me patience, tolerance and has also given me an ability to respond positively to special educational needs. Having this experience would definitely facilitate me to translate my knowledge better to pupils and that surely would aid them to understand the basic concepts. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe in teaching patiently and with dedication. My approach to teaching is straightforward and begins with generating questions and curiosity within young people’s minds so that they can think well. |

| About Paul: My name is Paul and I am an MA student at Durham University. I have a BA in International Relations and Modern History, and A levels in Maths, History and Business Studies (All A grades) as well as French AS level and several other A grade GCSEs. Not only this but I also have a lot of experience in working with children, having worked at a summer cmpa in America the past two summers, working with a variety of ages from 8 through 17. I have also volunteered and worked in local schools with the University and mentored sixth formers whilst doing my undergraduate degree. I have a valid CRB background check and have been through extensive child protection training with the YMCA and evidence of this is available upon request. |
Teaching Experience: I started tutoring whilst doing my A-levels where I tutored several children in the main school my sixth form was attached to and enabled them to improve their grades over the course of their GCSE year, several from D to A grades. I continued with some tutoring during my undergraduate studies and enjoy the results when a tutee improves their knowledge of their subject with my help. I am looking to continue this at Durham University and hope to help several tutees in the area. |
Tutoring Approach: I find that it is most constructive to ask the tutee what they feel they are struggling with first off the bat and address these immediate concerns through methods of different explaining methods and going through exercises with them, as once these are dealt with they will expose other gaps in their knowledge or other areas they do not feel comfortable with. I also am a huge advocate of teaching good exam technique as this can really make the difference between the higher grades and will pass on my knowledge to my tutees. |

| About Shirley: I am a friendly and outgoing person who loves to smile. I am patient and understanding and currently an undergraduate taking a joint honours in chinese and english. |
Teaching Experience: I was a trained peer supporter in secondary school where I aided younger students with their class/homework. There I also worked with teachers in finding and trying out fun ways to encourage students to learn and take part in community/social events. A key aspect of the job was to provide support for any students with any social issues. For the past year I worked with tutoring my younger cousin in her keystage 3 mathematics. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that everyone learns best with different methods be it taking notes or practically taking part, therefore I like to adapt my teaching methods to best suit each learner. However I have a few basic rules and guidelines, to ensure the tutee understand how things work. To understand the method and approach to reach the answer which is more significant than the actual answer itself at times. Often I like to revisit and go back to basics. |

| About Andrea: After leaving University I wanted a career which enabled me to help children learn and see them achieving success in what they work hard in. I became a teacher to make a difference to young people, however small that may be. I enjoy teaching maths at Secondary level and being faced with all the challenges the job brings. |
Teaching Experience: I have been teaching mathematics for 3 years now. I am currently a maths teacher at Leith Academy in Edinburgh. |
Tutoring Approach: Highlight areas of weakness and identify why there may be a lack of understanding. Practise questions from past papers and allow the child to feel confident to ask for help. I feel that it is not only important that the child is given the opportunity to learn on a one to one basis if they are struggling, but to feel that they can ask for help in a non-threatening environment. |
