About Catherine:
I am a recently graduated Psychology student from the University of Leeds. I achieved three A-levels in Business Studies. Economics, and Psychology all of which were to a grade A standard. My interest in teaching and education has stemmed from my volunteer work as a teaching assistant during my degree. I aim to pursue my career to become an educational psychologist.

About Thomas:
Hi,
I am a twenty-two year old male, living, working and studying in Cambridge. I have just finished a three-year politics, psychology and sociology degree at the University of Cambridge, and am carrying on for a fourth year.
I come from a really big family, with lots of younger brothers and sisters. As a result I've been giving tips, hints and tutoring for as long as I can remember.
I am now starting a family of my own, and am hoping to tutor in my spare time (!) between the baby and the degree.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored several A-Level candidates in psychology. The first of these was a friend of the family; she recommended me to others, and my list of students quickly grew. However, this has only really been seasonal work outside of university termtime.

During my first two years at university I worked for a company called Learning Curve Ltd. This involved teaching university students with learning disabilities to use their specialist equipment.
This was part of a governmental initiative to encourage university applications.

Tutoring Approach:

Tutoring must be interactive. The student must learn actively rather than just sit and listen.
The tutor must be enthusiastic. If the student becomes passionate about the subject then learning will happen very naturally.
The subject must be made relevant to the student. If the student cannot see why it is important ot learn about something in particular, it will be a struggle.

About Rachel:
I am currently employed as a Psychology Research Fellow by the University of Southampton, but I'm currently based in Manchester. I lived and worked abroad for many years and have travelled extensively. Teaching English as a foreign language is a very student centred approach to teaching and learning, and is something I have carried over successfully into teaching other subjects.

Teaching Experience:

I have seven years experience of teaching English as a foreign language, teaching adults, teenagers and children from the age of four. I taught four semesters at a university in Bogota, Colombia, which included not only English language classes, but also classes in English on other topics, including psychology and British history and culture. I am a motivated, and interested teacher. I enjoy sharing knowledge and seeing students develop. I successfully prepared many students for entrance exams to English speaking universities throughout my career as an English teacher. My experience includes teaching groups and one on one classes. In addition I was an oral and written examiner for various Cambridge exams including IELTS. I was also a teacher trainer for an online course for non-native English teachers.

Tutoring Approach:

I have always enjoyed teaching and feel that one on one tutoring can be exceptionally beneficial to a student. It allows the student to feel comfortable and to learn at their own pace, while at the same time allowing the tutor to tailor the sessions specifically to the individual student, taking into account their particular strengths and weaknesses.

About Leo:
Hi, I'm currently an undergraduate student at the University of Leeds studying BA Economics + Philosophy who would like to tutor part time in subjects that I have studied in the past and have knowledge in. I would in Leeds locally and you can contact me at leo(dash)e(dash)j(at)hotmail(dot)co(dot)uk.

Teaching Experience:

this would be my first time tutoring, however I am a bright student who did well in school and in exams and I've been through the whole system so I understand from a students perspective of what is needed.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe simple and clear explanations that follow logically are the best way for a student to understand and remember. Also I will be as patiently and friendly as possible because a student need to be motivated and feel relaxed while they're learning to be at their best. Lastly I also believe face to face contact is the best way to teach and learn, therefore I will not tutor online.

About Antonia:
I am a 25 year old female English Language and Linguistics graduate (BA Hons, University of Sheffield.) I live in the Hunters Bar area of Sheffield and currently do a mixture of freelance and agency tutoring work.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience tutoring one-to one at GCSE and Alevel level (English) and also experience in teaching English as a foreign language to International students. I have also taught reading and writing skills at primary level.

Tutoring Approach:

The most rewarding aspect of tutoring for me is adapting my approach in a way that meets the demands of each student. This means that I tailor my approach finely, to the particular individual. The first session involves an assessment of the student's learning style, so I can find out what best motivates them. For example, if they they are motivated by a target-driven approach, then we write down a list of achievable goals, and then periodically do a review to see if these goals have been achieved. I find this approach advantageous for monitoring progress closely. However, I also favour a less military approach in the case of students who do not work efficiently under pressure (me included!) I find this especially useful if students are experiencing extreme difficulties and need support rather than constant targets. I aim to encourage and motivate students in a way that enables them to reach their full potential, and also emphasise the importance of questioning and discussion in my lessons particularly in the case of Alevel subjects. I love rising to the challenge of improving a student's ability and assisting their success in the given subject. I think my style of tutoring reflects this.

About Rebecca:
Good afternoon, my name is Rebecca B. Fern and I would like to be considered for the research assistant position within the CATS Study at your university. I graduated from Wheaton College in 2005 with a Bachelors degree with honours in Psychology and Sociology and continued my education the following autumn at the University of Leeds where I completed my Masters degree in Gender Studies.

I am a very enthusiastic, gregarious 25 year old woman who moved to the UK this past August subsequent to marrying a lovely Welshman. I enjoy music, theatre, traveling, rugby, football and most importantly, reading and writing. I have incredible patience and my listening skills are envied by many, qualities I feel are particularly essential to a mentoring role.

I have a relentless passion for learning and have found that it is in education where my heart truly lies. I am waiting for my husband to complete his degree before I return to the university sphere to complete my PhD. In the meantime, I am eager to seek other opportunities that will provide me with further experience in the educational realm.

Teaching Experience:

Despite endless hours of babysitting as a teenager, it was my mentoring experiences at university which provided me with my foundational experiences in interacting with children and teenagers. During my first year at university, I joined an after-school outreach program for at-risk children in our local community who primarily came from unstable home environments. We were responsible for interacting with these children for a few hours in the evenings, a time where, in our so-called sanctuary, they felt completely safe from the precariousness and violence of their home environments. The following summer, I was selected as a HERO (Higher Education Readiness Opportunity) mentor for a group of thirty first-generation college students. I was responsible for supervising both their academic and behavioural performance during their residential stay at my university where they were offered a glimpse into the academic and social sphere of university. Later, during my second, as well as my final year at university, I was selected as a preceptor (mentor) for a group of eighteen first-year students enduring their transition to university life. I was responsible for taking them through the orientation week and introductory activities, as well as acting as their student advisor, thereby monitoring their academic and social performance throughout their initial year at university. Collectively, these experiences provided me with the stepping stones to gaining confidence in my ability to successfully lead and instruct and in my capacity to communicate with individuals across the ages, regardless of their background.

Tutoring Approach:

I have an innate passion and drive to help others in need. In my experience I have found that even the offering of help can be incredibly valuable and motivational for others. It can act as a wake up call, as if to say "someone else has recognised that I am struggling" and furthermore encourages them to take action to better their situation.

I firmly believe that in order to excel at anything in life, you must enjoy the journey to your destination. Furthermore, I feel that if you can (forgive the cliche) make learning "fun" for individuals of any age, they are less likely to resist your assistance and more likely to invest greater interest in the learning process.

About Mhairi:
I'm 19 years old and I'm originally from Stonehaven, just south of Aberdeen but during term time at university I live in Aberdeen. I am just about to finish my first year at the University of Aberdeen, where I study Psychology. I hope to finish my four year degree and then go on to do my postgraduate diploma in education, in order to become a teacher.

Teaching Experience:

I have no teaching experience in any official role, but I have worked with children before in an after-school club, where I did occasionally help with homework. I also tutored my younger brother for his Standard Grade exams.
I was also Prefect and a House Captain at Mackie Academy, which involved a high level of organisation and communication, and working with younger pupils.

Tutoring Approach:

Every student is different, and learns in different ways; some take in pictures better than words or vice versa, for example. Learning shouldn't be a chore, it should be enjoyed in order to be retained. Also, there should be a rapport between the student and the tutor; if they don't get along well enough, the student won't learn as well, and may not feel comfortable enough to ask questions if they don't understand.

About Ruth:
I am a PGCE qualified Primary School teacher and have extensive experience of one-to-one tutoring all age groups. I lived in France for eight years so have a native level and accent. I am currently taking time out of classroom teaching to study for a Masters degree so am returning to tutoring. I have taken a summer job at a local English school to keep my skills and training with teenagers and adults up to date.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught the British National Curriculum in mainstream primary schools for the last four years. Whilst at University studying for my first degree I tutored English, French and Psychology to adults and teenagers. I have helped prepare GCSE and A-Level exams for English and French. In addition to this I have taught in ESL schools during the summer and coached IELTS and Cambridge exams.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in a results orientated approach to teaching. Whatever your goals are, I will help you set achievable objectives that you can measure your progress by. As a primary teacher, I also know that learning should be fun to keep you motivated so I try and make lessons as enjoyable as possible and use a variety of activities and methods in each session.

About Chloe:
I have been involved with Psychology for the last 17 years - since I started studying it at A level. I gained my degree in Psychology from Leeds University, and my PGCE teaching qualification from Huddersfield University.

I remain incredibly enthusiastic about this fantastic subject and am very successful in getting learners excited about understanding the concepts they encounter.

I am currently able to offer tutoring for GCSE, AS and A2 Psychology (AQA Specification A), including overviews and explanations of different areas such as key approaches, underlying topic areas, coursework and homework concerns. I can also provide specific focus on exam techniques and requirements, such as understanding assessment criteria, and including sample papers, answers, and feedback.

Teaching Experience:

I have 8 years teaching experience from GCSE to Degree level, and with learners from 16 years upwards. I have taught both in college and school classes.

I have taken part in a number of successful Ofsted inspections, most recently in 2006 when I achieved a Grade 2. In our 2007 internal observations I achieved a Grade 1.

Tutoring Approach:

The key to successful tutoring is to tailor it to the needs of the individual or group being tutored. Combining this with personal experience of knowing what it is like to need help and guidance with a subject (not Psychology in my case) and how good it feels to get that support, I aim to provide the learner with a genuine interest in the subject, whilst helping them to gain confidence in their own abilities.

After initial discussions with the learner I can plan a work scheme to suit, with overall goals as well as aims for each tutoring session, and reviews to ensure these are achieved, and meet the individual needs of the learner.

Tutoring sessions can be booked weekly, as a revision aid, as an intensive course over a few days, or as a private candidate for a full course. I can also provide 1-1 tutoring, or for a group if required.

About Jennie:
As a young and dynamic teacher with a genuine passion for my subject, I enjoy spending time in the classroom and sharing my enthusiasm with others. I am easy going and understand the flexibility that is essential when tutoring. As a committed and responsible individual, I can assure complete integrity and honesty in my tutoring.

There is no mountain too great if tackled with the right approach, positivity, some hard work .... and a cup of tea and a biscuit!

Teaching Experience:

I am currently Head of Psychology Department at a thriving Sixth Form. I have taught a range of exam boards, and am willing to tutor students studying for any exam specification. The advantage of being (relatively!) recently trained is that I am up-to-date with the latest specifications, and as an examiner for an exam board I am familiar with what the exam boards are looking for.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that patience and understanding are key to being a successful tutor. These personal skills, coupled with a sound academic background, are integral to my approach to one-to-one tutoring. Every student is different, and I can tailor the sessions to suit each individual.

About Hayley:
I am a trained teacher, with a degree (2:1) in Psychology, from the University of Reading, and a PGCE in Advanced Early Years. I have classroom experience, specifically in Early Years and Key Stage One. I am currently working as a Children's Pastor and so have regular contact with children of primary school age.

I have been working with children since I was 16, babysitting, tutoring, running and leading activity groups and teaching. My job currently doesn't give me time to teach full time, so I am tutoring to keep myself in the education loop.

I have a CRB Enhanced Disclosure Certificate.

Teaching Experience:

I have always had an interest in teaching and have experience dating back to my own school days where I would choose to work in schools during work experience, or volunteer to help whenever I could. I based my psychology dissertation around language development in children and spent time working in schools.

On an official basis I am a trained teacher with some classroom experience. During my training I had placements in Foundation Stage and Key Stage One settings.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is to base it around the needs of the individual needs of the client.

My aims are to build students confidence in their abilities and to raise their expectations with challenging, pupil centered and rewarding lessons, producing great results. I am interested in helping all primary aged children, from children who may struggle in specific areas, those who need help with homework, or those who need to be pushed forward in their abilities.

I am very patient and enjoy helping others to learn.
I can provide extra tuition to keep children focused during holidays.

About Oliver:
I'm Oliver, I'm a 26 year old from Sheffield with English as my first language. I have just completed a degree in education studies and history at the University of Derby and have experience in cultural and religous history as well as the more traditional topics.

My education portion of my degree looked at the psychology of learning and behaviour management, allowing me to understand many learners and the difficulties faced.

I am commited to acquiring additional knowledge through my own development and love languages, currently engaged in learning Japanese with another private tutor in Sheffield whom I can recomend.

Teaching Experience:

Having completed a degree in education studies and history, I have extensive experience teaching from primary, through secondary and even post 16. As well as this I have been involved in private tutoring and youth work throughout my time at university.

Prior to this I was a technical coach for a major internet service provider and built and delivered a variety of bespoke training programmes in IT related fields.

Tutoring Approach:

My main approach will always be to teach an academic skillset to underpin the traditional study of any subject. This allows me to help learners understand how they learn and make them more autonomous, skills often taught at university. These skills are transferrable to other areas of life and will help focus and organise learners.

On top of this, it is my aim to provide guidance from the curricula and provide a widening of this through directing reading and personal development - but every learner is different and as such discussion and ongoing reflective review would dictate the tweaking of any style to match that of the learner.
