| About Female: From the Manager of My Child's Education 'My Child's Education' was started by a husband and wife team. My name is Aminur Rahman. I am a medical doctor, aged 29 and currently working full time. My wife, Shahina Ahmed is a full time mum. We have two daughters. The first is aged 5 years and the second is 1 year. While thinking about the future of our daughters' education we realised that there was no facility for quality private tuition with which we would be completely satisfied and to which we could send them to in the future. This is why we decided to set up 'My Child's Education' in November 2006. We believe that there are many other parents who think similarly. We believe that many parents would like their daughters to be tutored by high quality female tutors in a safe environment where they can interact with other similar girls to reach their potential. I myself have high expectations of both tutors and students, having received a high quality education myself as a child and having achieved straight A's in 11 GCSEs (including 4A*) and 2 A's and 2 B's at A-level before going on to University. I have both received private tuition myself and also tutored children during my student days. These experiences have given me an insight into what is actually required for success. We run this organisation as efficiently as we can and without hiring unnecessary staff, thereby reducing running costs and ultimately the fees to a minimum. The fees primarily go towards class hiring costs and tutors' fees. We aim to offer some of the best pay rates around in order to attract the best tutors. I hope that your child will enjoy and benefit immensely from the tuition she receives at My Child's Education. If you ever have any questions, queries or concerns then please do not hesitate to contact me. Dr Aminur Rahman |

Tutoring Approach: 'My Child's Education' has been set up to set up with the aim of providing a weekend school of a high quality for bright girls aged 8 - 16 (Years 4-11) where all the students and teachers are female. Many parents in the local community would prefer their daughters to receive private tuition in a female only environment due to cultural, religious or safety concerns. There are no such weekend schools available for this group of students and parents in Birmingham. Hence this scheme. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Khurum: I am a passionate, confident and energetic private tutor who can ensure your child achieves their expected level if not higher. I have an excellent tutoring record from boosting pupil confidence so that they can perform better in exams and coursework to pupils passing selective entrance exams thereby achieving their ambitions. I am realistic and set measurable yet challenging targets for my private students. I strongly believe in that if a student works hard and is dedicated, they will achieve their ambitions and desires. I have and always will endeavour to deliver at the highest level to achieve this. |
Teaching Experience: I have worked in primary and secondary schools since I was reading for my Biochemistry degree at King's College London. I have worked as a school mentor and teaching assistant before embarking on my teacher training course. I have gained a Post Graduate Certificate in Education Studies qualification from Keele University. As part of this course, I had placements in 3 different schools both primary and secondary. I have been a private tutor since 2002. Despite being new to this role, I'm very energetic and full of ideas which have guaranteed success. Being young is advantageous as I can motivate your child to perform at their best if not higher. |
Tutoring Approach: Confident, dedicated and passionate approach, using a wide range of teaching methods tailored to how your pupil learns. My lessons are enjoyable and exciting, which I feel is important so that the pupil doesn't lose interest. I also have the ability to adapt the pace of the lessons thereby sustaining the pupils attention and concentration. I use a wide range of resources depending on the level of study. For example, for a GCSE Maths student, as part of their homework, I assign sufficient GCSE exam-style questions right from the beginning so that the pupil is able to come to terms with the standard required of them. I use a wide range of textbooks and other literature as appropriate. I have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, which I use to ensure parents are aware of their child's progress and to inform them of my future lessons. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Aleha: I am a University of Birmingham Medical Biochemistry and Toxicology Post Graduate who has been working in the NHS for the last 10 years. I lead a team of medical scientists on a daily basis and also train and educate other scientists. I have a passion for imparting knowledge. I am a very sociable, amicable person who has a genuine desire to teach, motivate and mentor our future generation. I wish to help create intelligent and confident young minds and guide them onto the path to success in every aspect of life. |
Teaching Experience: I have no formal teaching qualifications, however I have exceptionally high academic achievements and teach graduates and undergraduates the principles of medical science and analytical chemistry. I have also tutored several members of my family and friends, who have gone onto Grammar Schools, University and are successful in their current careers. |
Tutoring Approach: My philosophy is that "wisdom grows from study". Children posses the greatest and most intelligent minds. As a tutor, my job is to nurture and bring out the best in a child. Encouragement and enthusiasm is what drives children and makes them want to learn more and strive to succeed. I believe in repeating and practising subject areas which are difficult. Setting attainable targets and helping a child achieve such targets is a pleasure. Every child is intelligent and has an abundance of potential and energy. I hone in on that energy, and encourage them to have self belief to reach their full potential. All it takes is a little patience and perseverance. Through study, every child will learn to be focused, disciplined, mature, wise and self confident. That is what I aim to teach. My subject knowledge, is superb, in all the areas that I teach. |

I have had main responsibility for AS/A2 chemistry teaching at a large state school and I have also had pastoral experience as a form tutor for Year 10, Year 11 and Year 7 classes. Passionately committed to all my students and offering experience of teaching students with a wide range of abilities. Will travel to students' own home and available at weekends, evenings and for some week-day sessions. Birmingham, Solihull and West Midlands areas. |
Teaching Experience: Qualified teacher with 3 years experience of teaching in state schools. I have taught in an inner city school envirionment and have also taught students of high ability in an 'outstanding' school achieving 100% 5A*-C GCSE passes. Experience of teaching at KS3, 4 and 5. AQA GCSE science (separate sciences, dual award, core science, additional science and additional applied). At AS/A2 level I have taught chemistry (OCR Salters and OCR). Also qualified to teach AS/A2 biology. I am an established teacher on the Salters chemistry camps for GCSE students and have been accepted as an assessor for the OCR examination board. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is to offer assistance which is student-led wherever possible. Students are usually well aware of areas of difficulty and of their own preferred learning styles. My aim is to provide a service that is tailored to the learning style of the student and focused on their individual needs. I expect that the tutor session will be informal and relaxed but also intense and productive. Each session should encourage the student that progress is being made, that classroom teaching has been re-enforced and that scientific concepts have been understood fully. |

| About Tahmeena: I'm a 19 year old currently studying Engineering at the University of Cambridge. I am a fun, lively and mature person who, prior to moving into engineering, considered a career in teaching. I love to paint, draw, play guitar and row. I am very able in Mathematics and would consider tutoring on a multiple number of subjects on request. I, along with 2 brothers and sisters, have all passed the 11+ so would be willing to advise on that. My prices are negotiable as I didn't really have a figure in mind. If your child is inquistive and wants to learn... I don't mind if the fee is reduced! |
Teaching Experience: - 2 weeks work experience at a Primary school - Tutoring a fellow student in GCSE maths whilst at college - Working at a summer playscheme for children |
Tutoring Approach: My approach is a relaxed one, that I feel gets results. Children can have fun with me, but I make sure that they know that I expect results. My plan has always get people to practice and practice... particularily with Maths, to pass an exam, familiarity with the questions to be asked is the key thing. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About David: I'm 21 and a physics graduate (Hons) from the University of Sheffield. Currently I'm studying for a diploma in piano teaching and performance. While perhaps I lack experience (hence lower prices than most), private tutoring is what I want to do as a profession and I consider it perfectly fitting for my personality. I'm soft-spoken, patient and caring and I feel I can talk to children (and reason with them if neccessary). Although it will be some time before I start up as a tutor properly, for now I'm offering lessons at any time (probably) until the end of the Christmas period and then evenings and weekends after that. I'm most qualified in physics and maths and I'm willing to teach those up to A2 level. Chemistry I can teach up to GCSE level. I also offer piano lessons at 15 per hour/8 per half hour. Biology is something I have a strong grasp of, but didn't study at A level. I consider myself more than capable of a high standard of teaching in both Biology and Combined Science, but it's important you know of my qualifications if you wish me to teach at GCSE standard in this. Note that I don't drive and in order to travel to your home there may be additional charges because of the high cost of public transport. Tutoring at my home is preferable. Online could be arranged but may well be less effective. |
Teaching Experience: Some casual tutoring sessions. |
Tutoring Approach: I'm a strong supporter of lifelong learning and I'll always try to read widely and expand my own knowledge. However I also believe in goal-orientated learning, and that it's important to decide what you want to achieve in a subject and then make it happen. I understand that the same methods don't work for everyone, and that it's important to be adaptable and work to a student's strengths and weaknesses. If a student is struggling to understand a concept, then it's time to try another approach. Results aren't guaranteed without effort on the part of the student and so motivation and discussion of aspirations is vital. One lesson a week isn't enough to get a student through exams unless they can be set further work and actually stick to it. If they do work hard enough, two or more hour-long lessons a week are still advised for exams. Ten minutes of each hour lesson would usually be devoted to recapping and discussion of previous work. Close to exams it's important to go through questions and past papers if they're available and discuss exam technique where appropriate. When it comes to teaching in preparation for exams, I request advanced notice of the syllabus and exam board if possible, so that lessons can be tailored for the specific exam they will be taking. If instead you'd like me to teach in a more all-round way, then that's also fine. I'm usually available to answer questions via email outside of lessons, free of charge. |

| About John: I began studying Medicine, then changed to BSc Genetics, then gained a PGCE with a Physics specialism, worked for two years teaching Secondary Science, and am now studying for an MA in Sociolinguistics. I am fascinated by all areas of Science from quantum mechanics, chaos and cosmology to socio-biology, cognitive science and psycholinguistics. I have a passion for acquiring knowledge and educating others, and have an ever-expanding range of strategies to suit individual needs. |
Teaching Experience: I have experience as a classroom teacher of Science with year 7 up to year 13 across the ability range, and have successfully tutored students in their homes in all three sciences at GCSE and A level to improve grades for re-sits. |
Tutoring Approach: I make extensive use of past exam questions; the best way to do well in exams is to practise doing exams! This also allows realistic monitoring of performance as tutoring continues. I normally email exam questions for students to attempt before the tutoring session. Students should have time to explore their interests in the subject by asking questions of their own. This is an important part of reflective learning and will help build and maintain enthusiasm. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Rebecca: I am currently a sales professional working in the pharmaceutical industry. I graduated four years ago from the University of Southampton, with a BSc(Hons) in Biomedical Sciences, at 2:1. I 'fell' into tutoring recently through mentoring adult colleagues who were taking GCSE and A-Level biology, and having thoroughly enjoyed the experience I am now offering GCSE and A-Level tuition in Human Biology and GCSE teaching in Physics, Maths and Chemistry. I also offer tuition in groups if required (prices depend on group size), so groups of friends can get together to study if they prefer! |
Teaching Experience: * Previous coaching experience for GCSE and A-Level on a casual level * Teaching adult colleagues towards the ABPI examination (Associate of the British Pharmaceutical Industry) * All students for academic session '07 - '08 set to exceed predicted grades at GCSE and A-Level * Experience with challenged learners, including Asperger's Syndrome |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is very much lead by the individual being tutored. I am flexible to cover any areas the student would like to discuss and develop. I offer either a structured teaching programme, with agreed learning objectives, or a more relaxed tutorial, with an emphasis on identification of strengths and weaknesses. I can also offer support with coursework, spot tests and revision help as required. Group sessions, closer to exams, can be a fun way to introduce competition, which my tutees have found stimulating and productive to their revision! |

| About Abigail: I am a qualified teacher with three years experience of teaching in schools, and one year's experience of private tutoring (see below). |
Teaching Experience: From Sept 2006- Aug 2008 I taught full-time at Lord Williams's school, Thame. I taught science at Key Stage 3, Core and Additional Science GCSEs and AS level Chemistry (OCR). Exam Results: 40% of my AS level Chemistry students achieved grade B or above in 2007. 75% of my GCSE science students achieved on or above their statistical target grade in 2008 . 89% of my Key Stage 3 SATs pupils achieved on or above their statistical target grade in 2007. From Nov 2004- Aug 2005 I taught part-time at the School of St Helen and St Katherine, Abingdon (a temporary appointment to cover maternity leave). I taught science at Key Stage 3, and AS and A2 Chemistry (OCR Salters). Exam Results: All of my AS and A2 students achieved at least a grade C, with the majority achieving A or B grades. Whilst teaching at the School of St Helen and St Katherine, I also tutored one AS level chemistry student. This student struggled with AS level, and I helped him to achieve a D grade in the subject. |
Tutoring Approach: I take an individualised approach to tutoring, depending on the student's needs. I can offer help with school-set homework, and/ or teach and set questions on specific areas that a student finds difficult, or I can offer revision sessions covering the whole of the specification prior to an examination. |

Tutoring Approach: I am a committed tutor and like to mentor students from start to finish. | About Wasim: Highly enthusiastic, motivated, and conscientious final year undergraduate student in Aerospace Engineering. As a student at University, I have been passing my examinations with 'First Class'. Moreover, I have obtained an effective average of over 80% throughout my whole course of study. I am extremely efficient, reliable and able to adapt to people of all backgrounds and cultures. I have excellent time keeping skills and look forward to planning ahead. I am currently tutoring a large number of GCSE, A/L and University students on group and individual basis. |
Teaching Experience: I have been working for First-Tutors, UK-Tutors and Home-Tutors for more than two years now. Since then, I have been tutoring students at four main levels - GCSEs, A/Ls and University 1st & 2nd Year. I have also been a teacher for some time at my past school where I taught Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics for GCE A/L students. I could not continue teaching there because I had to continue my higher education. Two years ago, I Voluntarily taught GCSE, GCE O/L and A/L Mathematics and Science subjects for students with genuine interest in their studies. These students have produced excellent results in their examinations. The majority (about 70%) of my students have attained 'A' grade in the subjects for which I have been a tutor. The rest have attained 'B' and 'C' (minority) grades. There haven't been any grades less than a 'C' ever since I have been a tutor. I think this is a phenomenal record and I have been working hard to keep this standard of teaching at its highest level. |
Tutoring Approach: I approach students in many ways, this depends on the student's character, his learning abilities and how well he knows that particular subject. I would always be very friendly with the tutee and get to know where he stands in the subject(s). There will a faster rate of teaching with regular homework given to students to ensure that they understand what they will be taught. As the exams approach it will be a matter of fast track revision, doing past papers and going though marking schemes. I strongly believe that this would increase the student's ability and confidence, and thus leading to better performance in their examinations. In short, good results would be assured for students with genuine interest. |

| About Gerlof: I am a South African Expat and I have been living in the UK for the past 6 years. I graduated from University of Pretoria in 1978 with majors in Physics and Maths, and obtained a PhD in Physics from the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein in 1992. I worked as a research scientist with the Atomic Energy Corporation in South Africa until 1994 and then farmed mangoes in the Lowveld for another 7 years before emigrating to England. My wife and I live in Exeter with our youngest daughter who is eighteen. As a full time teacher I have enhanced CRB clearance. |
Teaching Experience: I have lectured at university level for two years, and have six years of GCSE-and A-level teaching experience in England. My A-level subjects are Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. In addition I have been involved in private tutoring since my university days. I find that being trained as a mathematician as well as a scientist gives me a unique insight into problem-solving. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that problem-solving by the tutee under the supervision of the tutor is the best way to identify weaknesses and solve them there and then. In this approach, we don't waste time discussing what students already know, but rather concentrate on what they don't know. When I accept a tutee I will give complete commitment and I will expect complete commitment in return. I pride myself on only accepting students who really want to succeed. Too often students waste their parents' money going through the motions. |

| About Sam: I am currently reading Physics at the University of Nottingham, and have just completed my second year. I received straight A grades at A-level in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Physics and am more than proficient in all of the above areas. I am a friendly and easy-going but i also understand the importance of hard work and commitment to obtain good grades. |
Teaching Experience: I have tutored AS-level Chemistry and A-level Maths during the holidays of my university. I have also spent 6 months working in a school in Australia teaching and helping in prep in the boarding school (for all sciences, maths and also other areas). I also spent some of my A-level year working as a teachers assistant in a school in Camden with young children. |
Tutoring Approach: For science and maths tutoring there can be no substitute for teaching the basics and building upon them. Once the concepts have been taught there must be an extensive practice of questions which will solidify those concepts in the mind. Only by answering questions can a student really know if they understand the subject material. |
