| About Andrew: I am an undergraduate student studying for a BSc Hons. in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Bath. From June of this I year I will be commencing a year long industrial placement at in Bracknell. I have a good sense of humour and a friendly, patient disposition. I take a meticulous and imaginative approach to my studies and relish a challenge. |
Teaching Experience: I have no formal teaching experience. However, I worked as a qualified assistant coach in my local badminton club for a number of years prior to commencement of my degree course, coaching junior players from the age of 6. During my time in sixth form I ran an Earth Sciences workshop for primary school children. In 2004, for a period of two years, I taught a person with special needs how to use a computer. |
Tutoring Approach: In commencing a structured, syllabus-focussed approach, I work towards the goal of ensuring that my tutees feel secure about their abilities and the course content in preparation for exams. Every effort will be made to ensure that a sound understanding of the concepts underlying the facts is gained. I realise the importance of a good working relationship with my tutees. A pre-tutoring meeting will be arranged so that I can judge what requirements the tutee has and so that he/she can decide whether or not they will feel comfortable commencing a course of tuition with me. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Ayodele: I am a Nigerian PhD student at the Centre for Tropical Veterinary Medicine , University of Edinburgh and my academic background is in veterinary science and parasitology. I am very enthusiastic about my subject and love to encourage young people to explore higher education and career options in science. I would like to go into academia after completing my PhD. My other interests include literature and dance. |
Teaching Experience: For the past 6 years I have worked with Focus on Higher Education in London as a student ambassador and mentor. My duties included giving talks on careers options and my research, tutoring science students, holding practical/laboratory sessions and participating in science fairs and summer schools for young people. Since moving to Edinburgh in October I have joined Research Communication in Action, a similar organisation, and continued this work |
Tutoring Approach: When I meet a new tutee, I first try to find out their specific reason for wanting tuition and what goals they want to acheive within a period of time. Tutoring sessions are based on getting the tutee to understand the basic scientific concepts and then to retain the key facts on that topic required for examination. These are then reinforced by practicing past exam papers. |

Tutoring Approach: I have no one approach to tutoring. The method(s) I use will be determined by the individual, how he/ she prefers to learn and what he/ she wants to achieve from the tutoring sessions. I feel that if an individual feels relaxed and is enjoying a subject, he/ she will learn more effectively. I am comfortable using all standard teaching methods including practical demonstrations, extensive questioning, written work and past papers. My position as a newly qualified teacher reguarly exposes me to new ideas and methods in teaching which I would be happy to try if I feel they may of benefit. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Ralph: I have just completed a Masters course in Biology (Integrative Bioscience) at the University of Oxford, and previously gained first class honours in Natural Science (Zoology) at the University of Cambridge. In addition to this biologically centred University Education I have recent (2004) A-levels in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Fine Art. So, I am very used to being in an academic environment and understand the needs of students at different levels of their education. I am always very happy to share the knowledge and understanding that I have picked up with others. |
Teaching Experience: Currently tutoring a student in preparation for GCSE mathematics, I have helped to prepare A-level students for (successful) interviews at Oxbridge colleges, and am keen to widen my teaching experience. |
Tutoring Approach: Firstly I would like to discuss with the student what they are hoping to gain from the tuition and then explore their current level of understanding in order to plan what would most benefit them. The tuition will probably consist mainly of discussion that engages the student's imagination and understanding of the subjects and highlights areas that might require improvement. Practical exercises will then be used where appropriate, with critical appraisal of the student's work. The tuition may be geared towards some particular goal (exams/interviews etc.) and in this case the desired end result will of course be kept in mind. |

View Christopher's Profile
Availability: Weekends / Weekdays
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Christopher: I'm a postgraduate student of clinical Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge, with research interests in the neurological and reproductive disorders of wild animals. I am extremely patient, good natured and understanding. I am thoroughly excited by the prospect of being able to share the knowledge and ideas in the biological sciences that I have accumulated over the past decade, and am keen to maintain a role in teaching or tutoring of some description well into my professional career. |
Teaching Experience: 1. 6 months working in the United States teaching local schoolchildren (ages 7 to 18) about aquatic and marine conservation. 2. Four day study programme teaching university members about reproductive diseases and pathology in exotic mammals. 3. Numerous online tutoring programs run through both the University of Cambridge (providing application support for Veterinary Medicine and Medicine degrees), as well as online e-mentoring in Biology, Chemistry and Zoology to A' Level students. |
Tutoring Approach: A calm, measured approach, yet one which firmly corrects misconceptions, backed up by additional, multiple lines of explanation in order to bring clarity to difficult concepts. I recognise the importance of long-term goals, as well as short ones, and adjust my teaching approach and the level of delivery accordingly until a student is entirely comfortable with the key concepts. I believe the grasping of over-riding principles to be far more important than mindlessly memorising facts, and that such facts hang better from a more solid framework. Regular multichoice, short answer and extended answer question papers form an integral part of my delivery, but the precise context of these is obviously dependent on the nature of the subject and qualification being studied. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Maeve: I am a 28 year old Irish girl, who has been living in London since 2003. I am currently on formal sabbatical from work as a senior environmental consultant, which I have been for the last 4 years, as I am reseraching other careers. I am enthusiastic, patient, kind and understanding. I have been through the Irish school system, but am familiar with the GCSE and A-Level systems and curriculums. |
Teaching Experience: I was part of a homework club, a community liaison between a Dublin community and my university (Trinity College) in 1997, helping an individual student (aged 12) with their homework. I was a supply teacher for a number of schools in Ireland from Sep 2002 to June 2003, teaching biology, chemistry and maths. In addition, I provided grinds for a Leaving Certificate student (approx A-Level standard), in biology, chemistry and maths. |
Tutoring Approach: I like to talk through the areas with which the student is having difficulties, and to see the standard at which they are at. Then, dependent upon their standard, I either go back through the basics with them or concentrate on specific areas of study. I consider each student as an individual. |
