I am an undergraduate student studying for a BSc Hons. in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Bath. I have no formal teaching experience. However, I worked as a qualified assistant coach in my local badminton club for a number of years prior to commencement of my degree course, coaching junior players from the age of 6. During my time in sixth form I ran an Earth Sciences workshop for primary school children. In 2004, for a period of two years, I taught a person with special needs how to use a computer.

Tutoring Approach:
In commencing a structured, syllabus-focussed approach, I work towards the goal of ensuring that my tutees feel secure about their abilities and the course content in preparation for exams. For the past 6 years I have worked with Focus on Higher Education in London as a student ambassador and mentor. When I meet a new tutee, I first try to find out their specific reason for wanting tuition and what goals they want to acheive within a period of time. Tutoring sessions are based on getting the tutee to understand the basic scientific concepts and then to retain the key facts on that topic required for examination. These are then reinforced by practicing past exam papers.

I have just completed a Masters course in Biology (Integrative Bioscience) at the University of Oxford, and previously gained first class honours in Natural Science (Zoology) at the University of Cambridge. In addition to this biologically centred University Education I have recent (2004) A-levels in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Fine Art. So, I am very used to being in an academic environment and understand the needs of students at different levels of their education. I am always very happy to share the knowledge and understanding that I have picked up with others.

Teaching Experience:
Currently tutoring a student in preparation for GCSE mathematics, I have helped to prepare A-level students for (successful) interviews at Oxbridge colleges, and am keen to widen my teaching experience.

Tutoring Approach:
Firstly I would like to discuss with the student what they are hoping to gain from the tuition and then explore their current level of understanding in order to plan what would most benefit them.

The tuition will probably consist mainly of discussion that engages the student's imagination and understanding of the subjects and highlights areas that might require improvement. Practical exercises will then be used where appropriate, with critical appraisal of the student's work. The tuition may be geared towards some particular goal (exams/interviews etc.) and in this case the desired end result will of course be kept in mind.

I am a qualified doctor practising general hospital medicine. The human body and life science formed part and parcel of my degree.

Being of Mauritian origin, I am equally fluent in English and French. Teaching French language (especially translation) to 11-16 year olds is therefore relatively easy for me.

Tutoring Approach:

I was part of a homework club, a community liaison between a Dublin community and my university (Trinity College) in 1997, helping an individual student (aged 12) with their homework. I was a supply teacher for a number of schools in Ireland from Sep 2002 to June 2003, teaching biology, chemistry and maths. In addition, I provided grinds for a Leaving Certificate student (approx A-Level standard), in biology, chemistry and maths.

Tutoring Approach:
I like to talk through the areas with which the student is having difficulties, and to see the standard at which they are at. Then, dependent upon their standard, I either go back through the basics with them or concentrate on specific areas of study. I consider each student as an individual.
