| About Vanessa: My name is Vanessa, and I am a first year student at Nottingham Trent University. I am taking business studies for my formal degree, but I also study Japanese language within the university. I have studied Japanese for a while now, and find it to be a very enjoyable and interesting language. I would be able to teach Beginner and Intermediate level Japanese to all ages. I have also studied English Literature to A-Level, and would love to assist anyone who needs help either in English grammar lessons or literature from Primary up to A-level. |
Teaching Experience: I have tutored Japanese previously in Northern Ireland. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a real passion for languages which I would love to be able to share with others. I would ideally teach beginners Japanese, including language basics and vocabulary, grammar lessons, reading and writing Hiragana/katakana, as well as an introduction to Kanji. I have quite a laid back approach to studying both English and Japanese, and usually meet at a cafe within the city. Everyone pick up languages and ideas at different paces, so I like to move at a pace that suits the student. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Stephanie: My name is Stephanie Joynes, I'm 19 years old and a second year student of German at Cardiff University, which I enjoy very much. I attended Wolverhampton Girls' High School from the ages of 11-18, which is a selective school often among the top-ranked schools in the country. I studied all of the core subjects alongside French, German, Japanese, Geography and Religious Studies up to GCSE level, achieving at least an A in all of these. I continued with German and Japanese to A Level, achieving an A grade in each, and AS levels in Applied ICT and Psychology at grade B. I have been involved with Girlguiding UK since the age of 14, and have since developed many skills, including work with young girls from age 5-16, and leadership skills. I am currently looking for a Guide group to join at University, and intend to complete a Leadership Qualification in the near future. |
Teaching Experience: For my Enrichment time in Sixth Form I elected to help with language teaching at a local comprehensive school. I helped in French classes for Year 9, assisting them with their learning by various methods including help with speaking, and leading activities with small groups. Within school, I was a Language Mentor during Year 13, meeting with students once a week to help them with their German skills. I enjoyed this very much as it enabled me to come up with different activities and methods to help the students. Along with a few of my peers I also helped to run a "summer school" for local primary school children for a day, which introduced them to Japanese. I assisted with all aspects of this, from planning to teaching the classes and joining in with the activities. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring would be friendly but professional. I would always come to each session fully prepared, although if the tutee felt there was something they would rather concentrate on instead I would accommodate that. |

| About Mhorag: I learned to speak, read and write Japanese in Japan and sat my level 1 Japanese Proficiency test there. I graduated from the University of Salford in 2005 with an MSc in IT (Distinction) and am currently working in the IT industry and seeking an outlet for my IT skills there. |
Teaching Experience: I have experience of teaching language to classes and individuals. My first experience goes back to 1997 and I later spent two years teaching in a private language school part time. My more recent teaching experience has been on a one to one basis. I have taught both traditional grammar based language and functional conversational language according to student and curriculum needs. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe in conducting lessons as far as possible in the target language and I ensure that all the supporting material exists to make that possible. Language should be functional, relevant and useable in order to make the learning effective so I would encourage pursuit of any outlets for using your Japanese. I particularly enjoy Japanese film and meeting Japanese people in Manchester as a means of keeping skills fresh. |

| About Emma: I am a calm, patient and understanding tutor with a sense of humour! I know first hand the difficulty of being under academic pressure and that, sometimes, students just need that extra bit of help. I am currently studying for BA Joint Honours in German and Japanese at Cardiff University. I also studied French and Spanish at a selective girls' school in Wolverhampton, and have obtained a year 1 certificate in British Sign Language. I have, as you may be able to tell, always been interested in languages, and feel that they come naturally to me. |
Teaching Experience: I was a peer mentor in sixth form, tutoring younger girls in their language studies, such as German and Japanese. I also tutored in a neighbouring school for pupils who were either having difficulty with their current French or German studies, or wished to learn some Japanese. More recently I also taught Japanese as part of a summer school scheme for Primary School leavers - they all responded well and I found it a fun and rewarding experience. |
Tutoring Approach: I have completed a course in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, or TEFL, and learnt to use various teaching methods and strategies. I feel it is important to incorporate fun in any lesson and to help improve the student's confidence in their studies - if they enjoy it, they are more likely to excel in what they do. |

View Nikki's Profile
Availability: Weekends / Weekdays
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Nikki: I am a 20 year old female university student studying a French and Japanese BA at Cardiff university. I am currently in my second year and I'm hoping to find some people who would like me to help them with their learning, because helping others to learn only reinforces what you already know, and I like to keep my brain active! |
Teaching Experience: At the moment I have no proper experience as a tutor, the closest I can claim to have had is helping my neighbour's children with ICT and helping my younger sister with French. I would like to try being a tutor as I've been told it's an enjoyable experience, and will give me some valuable experience for when I begin a teaching course after university. |
Tutoring Approach: I am willing to teach in a variety of ways, both online and offline, as well as helping you/your child to advance in the learning of your chosen subject. I would begin by assessing how far the tutee has already progressed in the subject and try to work out any weak areas, and then continue by creating exercises and situations designed to try and improve in those areas. For example; if I were tutoring the tutee in French and I found that their weakness was in the spoken language, I would have conversations with them and try to involve them in activities that use French language, such as watching French programmes, listening to French radio or the opportunity to speak with a native French speaker. I would also record the conversations so that the tutee could listen to them later and hear their own mistakes, then work on trying to correct them. If the tutoring were a completely online situation, I would communicate with the tutee via all methods of internet communication (IM, skype, e-mail) and use a similar approach to the one I would in person. |

| About Jennifer: I'm an American Masters student who has been living abroad since 2003. I moved to Scotland in September 2006 to study Ethnology and Folklore of Scotland. I work at a Secondary School as an administrator until the end of the school year. Next year I will continue on to my PhD. I have a lot of experience teaching children, including Drama and Improv. I look forward to teaching Elementary Japanese to any age group. |
Teaching Experience: 3 years of teaching English as a Foreign Language in Japan. I taught both children and adults, although adults were primarily at the Business level. I worked at Yamaha, Suzuki, Sony, and Honda to prepare employees for overseas transfers. On the third year I concentrated more on kindergarten and primary school English. |
Tutoring Approach: In the past I've been asked to design my own lesson plans, rather than be dependent on a book. If a student chooses a specific topic or grammar problem, I'm more than happy to follow through. If the student would prefer to use a textbook rather than a conversational based lesson, I am happy to design the course with the student. Group conversation classes are welcome! |

| About Ian: I have a degree in Urban Studies and Planning. I studied Geography, History and Politics at A Level, and I have a very keen interest in the built and natural environment, and the interaction between the two. Teaching Experience: I have taught English for the past 4 years to foreign students. I have taught children as young as 2, and adults as old as 70. I saw all of my students progress during the time they were under my tuition. |
Tutoring Approach: It is important that lessons are enjoyable. Motivation is very important when studying and I try to keep all of my lessons varied and interesting. It is very important to me that students want to study. A lesson with a disinterested student or teacher can be very de-motivating. Praise and encouragement also are vital to my lessons. |

Teaching Experience: During my studies in Poland I worked as a privet tutor and also as a voluntary teacher in a few primary schools and high schools. For a past year I enjoyed teaching English to Japanese students who came to Manchester as the university exchange students. I used to prepare people to the British Council examinations (FCE; CPE; CAE). |
Tutoring Approach: First of all, I enjoy teaching and I believe there is not a chance someone is not able to learn a foreign language. As a teacher, one has to be creative and try to learn as much as possible about their student to be able to teach effectively. All languages have their own logic, you just need to show people how this logic works and encourage them to follow it. Then, they will not fail. |

Teaching Experience: I've been teaching 4students in UK for 2 years. |
Tutoring Approach: The instruction style is on oral proficiency. The basic aim is to increase the students' ability to understand Japanese. Therefore, from the first lesson, we encourage students to communicate and use their newly learned language skills in their everyday lives. We believe that being able to communicate successfully in real life situations is important when learning any language. Though we stress grammatical and pronunciation accuracy, oral communication and comprehension is our ultimate goal. |

| About Jennifer: I have recently graduated in Japanese and English Linguistics from Newcastle University with a 2:1 hons. Encouraging people to make the most of languages really inspired me to pursue tutoring. I developed my interest in languages while learning German at school which also gave me my first opportunity to travel and experience other cultures. The beautiful intricacies of Japanese customs and the intriguing complexity of the language motivated me to study Japanese at university. Modern Languages is an essential part of the curriculum: developing students' confidence and communication skills, and expanding their ability to communicate their opinions. I appreciate the disastrous effect removing languages from compulsory education will have and hope to inspire children into enjoying languages as much as I do. The demand for interpreters and other language related professionals means this is equipping students with something extremely useful for the rest of their lives. |
Teaching Experience: As I had always been interested in speech and language science, a profession closely linked with education, I undertook work experience in a school for children with speech and language difficulties. Assisting both the teaching and language support staff meant I could sample both vocations. I believe the key to being a successful teacher lies in successfully communicating complex information. During the summer I taught Japanese privately in Leeds. My experience of language learning taught me how different teaching methods can have a completely different effect on students. Combining this knowledge with my private teaching experience confirmed for me that a more personal approach was always effective. |
Tutoring Approach: I use visual aids and other supplementary materials to try and engage the student. Themed lessons involving specific grammar points will also make learning more fun! |

| About Nyein: I have recently (June 2007) been qualified to graduate with BSc (Hons) Physics with Space Science degree from University College London (UCL). I will be continuing with my studies for Master's level in Applied Mathematics or Theoretical Physics and aim to follow research and teaching career. I am fluent in English, Burmese and Japanese and I also have computer programming skills. I am patient, which is most important in teaching, relaxed, flexible and friendly. |
Teaching Experience: Most of my teaching experience come from helping fellow students, teaching an adult person on a foundation course and through dropping into a few peer-assisted learning (PAL) sessions. |
Tutoring Approach: My approaching to teaching is to make students learn through examples. In doing so, students will not only gain problem-solving skills and understand the theories better, but also will be well-prepared for the exams at the same time. I believe it is very efficient way to learn and most suitable for subjects like Mathematics and Physics which you cannot remember everything but must try to understand underlying principles and must be able to apply them in different contexts. However, different students have different tastes to different teachings and I am therefore prepared to be adapt the way the student wants me to. |
