About Glenn:
A dynamic and young teacher, with a breadth of experience, I am passionate about the development and growth of young minds from all different backgrounds. My commitment towards a new challenge is unquestionable, as I believe self belief and determination are the keys to success. These are qualities that I always aim to bring out in my students and strongly feel that the best way to lead is by example.

Teaching Experience:

Having taught in a number of schools, predominantly in the Hertfordshire area, my teaching experience has been with students from 11 - 18 years old. Within this age range, I have taught (and still am teaching) from the A* level to learners who are lower in ability, some with special educational needs. This has enhanced my skills in terms of differentiation. I currently teach English at key stage 3 and 4 (11 - 16) but have had experience teaching English language and literature at AS and A level. In terms of Media, Communication Studies and Sociology, my expertise ranges from GCSE to A level.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach towards tutoring is one that is tailored to the tutee/s needs and draws on their preferred learning style. I am adaptable in terms of working on a one to one basis or in small groups. I am a firm believer in the benefits of assessment, both formative and summative, as this will ensure that progress is being made. Independent study is also vital to the success of a student, something that I encourage and a skill that I aim to develop with all tutee/s.

Having completed my first year of teaching at Highdown School, in Caversham, as I newly qualified English teacher, I am about to embark on my second year of teaching, with the aim to start a part-time MA in Education. My qualifications include a BA honours English degree, from The University of Reading, and a PGCE, in Secondary English, through Oxford Brookes University. I have previously tutored children for KS2 SATS, common entrance prep for grammar schools, GCSE revision for re-sits as well as tutored A Level candidates. About Evenstar:
I am a 32 year old American expat documentary filmmaker and freelance media producer. I have been living in the United Kingdom for four years. I originally came here to do my Masters degree at Goldsmiths College, University of London in Documentary Filmmaking and decided to stay on. I have spent my time in the United Kingdom attaining a Masters degree, working as a Multi Media and Film Tutor and working in freelance Media Production. I consider myself to be outgoing, friendly, understanding and compassionate. I like working with both children and adults alike in a creative, fun and open way.

Teaching Experience:

I have spent over two years teaching young disabled adults filmmaking and media skills. During this time I taught my students how to make music videos, Film editing skills, film history, Lighting and sound techniques and script writing skills.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that tutoring needs to be tailored to an individuals needs and way of learning. Everyone learns differently so therefore everyone needs to be taught differently. When I take on a new tutee the first thing I do is spend a bit of time getting to know that person and to access the ways that they like to learn and what it is that they want to learn. I then work with that person to help them achieve their goals. I believe it is important to check regularly with a tutee to make sure that they have an understanding of what is being taught. I also believe that learning should be fun and that it is important for a tutee to be able to grasp how what they are learning will be useful in the real world. If it is filmmaking or photography that I am teaching then I try to make as much of it as possible come from a hands on approach. The best way to learn is by doing. If it is art history that is being taught I believe the best way to do this is by actually going out, when possible, and seeing real art in real museums rather than looking at it in a book. This is how I first began learning about the subject and what inspired me to study it.

Teaching Experience:

I have some experience in post-16 education, having worked as a Facilitator and Teaching Assistant before attending university and have also mentored many peers at school and college.

About Alexandria:
I graduated last year with a 1:1 from Cardiff University in Journalism, Film and Broadcasting and have since then taken a CELTA course and taught as an ESL teacher at a summer school. I have a high grasp of English and Media, with specialities in textual analysis in film and English literature, and my degree has also nurtured a natural interest in and analysis of the English language.

Teaching Experience:

I have undertaken university, A2, AS and GCSE level exams in recent years and so am familiar with what is required to pass an exam. During my CELTA I taught adults, but I also have experience of mentoring GCSE students and teaching foreign students aged between 11-17.

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer to elicit responses from tutees rather than just present information, I strive to make lesson content not only relevant but enjoyable. This is primarily in presenting material using a range of different skills (e.g. auditory, kinesthetic, visual, etc) to give variation as well as identifying the needs of each individual student and between us setting achievable goals to aim for during our sessions.

About Harvey:
Harvey Parkes left his birthplace of Greater Manchester at an early age, and his formative years were spent in Spain. Of Icelandic descent, Harvey remains close to his ancestral roots, and has experienced a wide variety of cultures, people and places during his lifetime.

Originally a Chemistry undergraduate, Harvey's professional career has taken in activism, journalism, anti-fraud senior management, and even (despite a total inability to draw) cartooning.

Family ill-health saw Harvey move back north in 2001 and, after nursing his mother, Harvey decided to change career and move into filmmaking.

Harvey is a first-class honours graduate in Moving Image at the University of Central Lancashire. He is also recognised as a leading authority in cognitivism and Deleuzean philosophy within the work of the Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier.

As well as his writer/director output under the name Balti and Havana, Harvey has established a large corporate client base through his work under the banner of Elegua Productions.

Harvey is currently shortlisted for the UK Young Screen Entrepreneur award for 2008; the region's only industry professional to make the shortlist for this honour.

Teaching Experience:

For the past two years Harvey has taught professional broadcast directing to third-year undergraduates at the University of Salford. Harvey has previously lectured at the University of Central Lancashire, and is also an available lecturer for the University of Bolton.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tuition is one that best encourages the importance of discovery and the broadening of horizons within each student. Film, in particular, suffers for not being thought of as a cerebral industry when nothing could be further from the truth.

Using my broad knowledge base both in the industry and beyond, I use an informal and conversational style in order to break complex work down into its constituent parts; revealing the building blocks that make up all of cinema, and helping students to understand and explain how and why pieces of work succeed or fail.

I am not a tutor who spoonfeeds facts by rote, preferring instead to cultivate an attitude of critical thought and understanding within each student which they can go on to apply throughout their life.

About Jamie:
I have recently graduated from the University of Dundee in English Literature (2:1) and I'm looking for some casual work whilst I secure a more stable career. I am a keen reader and I very much enjoy watching films and even the odd play. I am a friendly, outgoing person with a patient manner.

I do not mind also providing a babysitting service whilst tutoring a student, be it the tutee or another child.

Teaching Experience:

Although I've not got any professional qualifications in teaching I am an educated, passionate and friendly person and I've also got a strong will to finish a project once I've started it. I'd be most diligent and exceptionally empathetic to any struggles the tutee might have with their studies; I struggled with a mild for of dyslexia in my primary years and then went on to do a degree in English! Safe to say that I can relate to a student's frustrations and have got my own ways of dealing with them.

I've now taught two of my cousins (ages 6,9) in English, science and a small amount of maths. I've also taught my girlfriend and two of my friends how to drive (I've done an Institute of Advanced Motorists qualification and I'm cheaper than a proper instructor!). I was also involved with helping out in an a first year English class for those with learning difficulties whilst I was a prefect at high school.

Tutoring Approach:

When teaching someone I feel it is very important to understand the student's interests and abilities and then use those skills to approach the subject that they struggle with. For instance, someone who is excellent at History but poor at English might have an excellent memory for facts but a poor grasp of language. What I'd do in that situation is convert language into what it essentially is; a set of rules and facts, most likely with the aid of humorous and memorable phrases or other psychological triggers. With this technique, and this particular hypothetical student, I'd maneuver their useful abilities into a position that they were able to bootstrap their less proficient skills.

About Terence:
I am a post-graduate from Kent University in Canterbury, where I am currently living. I have a keen interest in literature and cinematography and have graduated with an honours degree in English and Film Studies. I have also studied at Brighton Film School and have experience in directing short films and writing scripts on a freelance basis.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience has been informal but productive, from working volutarily with teenagers with learning difficulties, through to young men who were not able to learn about reading and writing as children.

Tutoring Approach:

I know from experience that the best and most interesting (both for tutor and tutee) method of teaching is not through rhetoric but through increasing the tutee's understanding and therefore reasoning of any given subject. I am friendly, polite and extremely patient, happy to tutor both children of a primary or secondary school age.
