About Lydia:
After attending a top grammar school for seven years, I graduated from the University of Exeter two years ago with a degree in Economics. Since then I have spent a year working in Recruitment and 6 months in Accounting.

Born to Spanish parents in London, I have been brought up speaking the language fluently but also have the technical skills required in examinations, having taken the subject at GCSE, A-Level and also completed modules during my degree course.

Mathematics was always my best subject and I completed my A-Level in one year, achieving an A grade.

In my spare time, I like to paint and travel.

Teaching Experience:

Although I have no formal training in tutoring, it is something I have always wanted to do. I always found helping siblings and friends challenging and rewarding. There is nothing like seeing a person realise they can do something they never thought they could.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is to instil the student with the confidence to fulfil their potential, whether in a subject they are already good at, or one that they struggle with.

About Maiko:
I am a second year Psychology student at the University of York. I am an open-minded, patient and highly motivated person with some experiences in tutoring. I am Japanese, so my native language is Japanese, but I am also fluent in English.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught English (as a foreign language), Mathes and Japanese before. I also helped some students get accustomed to entrance exam situations. People whom I taught these subjects varied from six years old to 65 years old.

Tutoring Approach:

I always try to keep in mind how I learned what I am teaching and what I struggled with when I studied what I am teaching. Looking through students' eyes often helps me understand better ways to teach and also makes the sessions more enjoyable.
I would like the students to not only study and memorise facts but actually learn for themselves. So I will try to make sure that I explain things properly until the student understand.
I may take different approach depending on the student's character, motivation and understanding.

About Nicola:
My name is Nicola Mangion and I have recently graduated from Merton College, Oxford University. I was very successful in my studies at Merton. In Michaelmas term 2005, I was promoted to Exhibitioner status and I later won a Postmaster scholarship in 2006 for my excellent grades in both college and university exams. I also developed good working relations with my tutors, and was asked by them to participate in the assessment of candidates for Modern History in Michaelmas term 2007. Alongside my tutors, I read and evaluate UCAS forms, marked the candidates' performance during their first interview and participated in discussions on the initial selection of candidates. I have therefore acquired first-hand insight into the interview and selection process in one of the most competitive colleges in Oxford. Later in the year, I was involved in the team of graduates and history tutors responsible for interviewing and selecting a new history tutor for the college. I am also strong in certain other academic subjects. For example, I have a very good understanding of Maths due to the mathematically-related modules I undertook as an A-level Student (Mechanics AS-level, Pure Maths A-level, Physics). As I lived in France for seven years as a child, and pursued a number of modules at Oxford which required a very understanding of written, scholarly French, I am also fluent in the French language.

Outside of my studies, I have pursued a range of activities, including rowing, chess, debating, music, drama, netball and lacrosse. I have enjoyed a number of leadership positions; most recently, I acted as captain of my college boat club, where I learnt to encourage my peers to fulfil their athletic potential. These activities have also allowed me to hone my communication and teamwork skills, which stand me in good stead when I explain topics to my students. Similarly, the combination of these activities with my own studies has encouraged me to become very disciplined and organised about the way in which I manage my time.

I hope that this account persuades you that I have the necessary academic and personal skills to act as an effective tutor and mentor.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently tutoring a number of pupils in both Maths and History. I have also given lectures at a number of local private schools on interview technique, the selection process, essay and source analysis technique to pupils who are applying to Oxbridge for history

Tutoring Approach:

My primary aim in tutoring students is to impart an enthusiasm for the subject. Students who are stimulated are more attentive and motivated to succeed. To do this, I try to make the students aware of the value and significance of the topic at hand, and ensure that their appreciation and understanding of the subject exceeds the basic requirements of their exam course. It is also important to focus on what the student wishes to achieve through private tuition. For example, I like to draw a detailed timetable of the progress they ought to make in the forthcoming months to remind them of their ultimate goal. I also give regular but manageable homework to make sure the student consolidates the work we do together, in conjunction with short tests at the start of each lesson to recap the material already covered. Lessons are interactive, especially those on History, because in my experience a discursive approach tends to be the most interesting for the student. I am also very flexible and will take on board suggestions and changes proposed by the student.

About Zenab:
I am currently an AS level student at City of London School for Girls. I am studying AS level Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Spanish and Critical Thinking.

Teaching Experience:

Overall, I have limited eperience in relation to teaching directly. At the age of 13, I tutored a 10 year old boy for 6 months, helping him with preparations for his 11+ entrance exams, which he later went on to pass. Also, having younger siblings, I find myself helping them with their homework often as well as occasionally teaching them new material. Further more I was previously a scout at 29th Hackney for 5 years. This usually involved looking after the younger cubs in the sense of taking over as the leader and running a session.

Tutoring Approach:

Having received a great amount of out-of-school tutoring sessions from the age of 9 I believe I have an excellent understanding of what they must be like in order to be effective. I feel the key to grasping new concepts and building on what is learnt at school or even homework queries is good, clear explanations and if the problem is still unclear then approaching the topic in another way. I feel patient, active learning is also very important to keep the student focused.

About Denise:
I am an owner of three Basset Hounds and six Alpacas. I live on a small island in Gloucestershire surrounded by the River Severn and Canal system. I have recently March 2008 left the LEA to enable me to provide children with tutoring. I basically live education, I am extremely conscientious and I put a tremendous amount of effort into my work. I work hard to ensure that my pupils receive the best education possible. I would like to work online or from home as I enjoy my life at home with my animals.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked in Further & Higher Education and Primary Education (7-11) I have been teaching since 1988 and have a considerable amount of experience. especially pupils with Special Educational Needs as I was the coordinator of this particular area for Gloucester. I have in the past taken pupils from the special education needs register and improved their attainment levels to a point that many are now in University or Collage.

Tutoring Approach:

I would initially assess my pupil and then produce a selection of targets for them to achieve. This would ensure that I was teaching the pupil at the correct attainment level and would ensure that I was enabling them to develop and reach their next attainment level. Know matter what their present attainment level is when I commence teaching the pupil, I would ensure that my pupil would at least reach the level at a minimum. I would also assess the pupil to find out how they learn and what would be the best way to teach them. I am a great believer that any pupil can reach a level of attainment that they wish to achieve and one to one help is always beneficial.

About Jodie:
I am a 22 year old female currently studying for a Masters in Social Policy at The London School of Economics. I am friendly, engaging and used to working with, and teaching, students from all social backgrounds and ethnicities. I am passionate about teaching and the education system and I have been tutoring privately since leaving Oxford University in June 2007.

I am flexible about working hours but I would prefer to teach within 30 minutes travel time from my home in South London.

Teaching Experience:

English Language and Literature - I have a degree from The University of Oxford in English Language and Literature. I also completed a full a-level in each subject separately, and I am therefore happy to teach either at any level. I currently teach one student for A-level English Literature and one student for GCSE English and, over the past year, I have helped 5 more students with exam preparation and coursework for GCSE and A-level English Literature.
I have also been working for a Not-for-profit company that provides educational provisions for students that have been expelled from mainstream school. Through this work I have become very familiar with The AQA GCSE English syllabus, and working with students who have emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties.

Maths - I have been teaching key stage two maths privately since November 2007 and I am up-to-date with the curriculum and preparation needed for Key Stage Two SATS examinations.

Sociology - I have an A-Grade a-level in this subject and I am undertaking a sociological/political masters. I am happy to teach this subject up to a-level.

Entry Exams - This year I have also worked for Insight Education - a company which helps to prepare students for Oxbridge applications. I am very familiar with the Oxbridge application process for all subjects, and I am also preparing two students specifically for Oxbridge entrance for English Language and Literature. I am happy to advise on this.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is very much dependant on the student. I believe that different people are suited to different learning styles and therefore I always take the first couple of sessions to assess how a student likes to work and what their difficulties might be.

I like to set 'homework' tasks - even if they are very short - to encourage the student to develop the skills they are learning in their own time. I am happy to mark additional work and essays in my spare time and to e-mail students with any advice or feedback that they may require whilst working on a particular assignment.

About Josh:
I am a 16-year-old currently taking History, Politics, Philosophy and German at A-Level. I am studying at King Edward VI Grammar School in Chelmsford. As the eldest of seven (soon to become eight), I have assisted with school work at all levels from primary school to GCSE level. For those who are interested, I earned 1 A*, 10 A and 2 B grades in my GCSEs last year. Apart from school, I am a keen sportsman, having played just about every sport most people can think of (and some they have never heard of!). I like to think of myself as being easy to get on with, although I may have to leave that decision up to the parents and tutees! I also have something of a passion for a classic general knowledge, being part of a team of National Schools' Championship Finals in 2006. It is debatable whether the relevance of this fact and whether I become your tutor, but I like to brag. Sorry!

Teaching Experience:

No official experience as of yet, though as the eldest of seven I do end up helping at various levels of school work.

Tutoring Approach:

As a student myself, I am sympathetic to the situation and the stress the tutee will be under. Therefore, I strongly believe that a relaxed and friendly environment is where you learn most effectively. Therefore I will be somewhat informal, although always on topic, any will attempt to adapt any lesson to suit the needs of each individual.
A generic lesson plan might go as follows:
Firstly, a very short recap of the previous lesson, to ensure the subject has been understood fully. Secondly, an explanation of the lesson plan and an objective for the session. Thirdly, the main part of the lesson, which would depend entirely on the subject. This would be explaining the events in question in History, reading a section of a book in English, and so on. Following this, I would attempt to introduce and explain the value of these (such as explaining the meaning of a poem, or showing practical examples of the new verbs in German). Finally, there would be a short Q&A session, in which the tutee would make clear any part of the lesson he/she did not understand, and any problems would be re-examined. I tend to stick relatively rigidly to this plan, although the timings of each may vary depending on the subject, and indeed the tutee.

About Barbara:
I am an experienced personal tutor who has recently completed a law degree at Oxford University and have gone onto further study as a postgraduate in Bristol. I would like to think that my education reflects a high level of achievement that qualifies me as an ideal candidate for a personal tutor role. Throughout my studies, I have offered my services as a personal tutor to students at varying stages of their education. I would like to believe that my method of teaching has been highly beneficial to my students and I am in possession of the requisite communication skills to deliver real results.

I have enjoyed teaching Law, up to degree level, English Language & Literature, Government & Politics, Psychology and Sociology up to A-level standard. I offer up to GCSE standard all of the above, along with the Sciences, Mathematics and History.

Aside from enjoying my students success, I enjoy the teaching itself and I believe that this enthusiasm is crucial in order to truly engage with a student and ensure they are reaching their full potential.

I am currently studying for an LLM (Masters in Law) at Bristol University. I have a 2.1 degree in the law, obtained in June 2008 from Wadham College, Oxford University, I went to Oxford following a change of heart during my medicine degree at Sheffield University, where I picked up the qualification of 1st MB on successful completion of the foundation year. As such, I have taken the equivalent of Biology, Chemistry and Physics A-Level to add to the A-Levels in English Language and Literature, Sociology and Psychology I already achieved.
I should make the point that my A-Levels were studied and completed over the course of one year, and I gained A grades in all of them, along with 100% scores in most of the papers.
My focus in law has primarily fallen on public law, my Masters itself specialises in international law and as such I have extensive knowledge of the principles underlining British government and politics. I also have experience working for both the British and European Parliament.

To summarise and conclude, I feel very fortunate to have received the education that I did and I look forward to continuing to use it for the benefit of others.

Availability: I am available most days as the level of independent study required by Bristol means that my time is fairly flexible.

I am also happy to give lessons either in my own home or the student's. I live with my partner in a house in the 'Suffolks' area of Cheltenham and we have a large designated study room which is kept clean, tidy and warm!

Teaching Experience:

I have extensive experience in offering personal tutor services. I started a the age of 16, where I was fortunate enough to help an 8 year old dyslexic boy manage his condition. After one week, he had for the first time learnt to write his name and address. On the back of his parents recommendations, I picked up a number of students of different ages and abilities and taught up to Key Stage 3. As my own education progressed, so did the level of syllabus I was qualified to teach and, following my entry into Oxford, I felt more qualified to teach at the higher levels.
I have had experience in preparing students for GCSEs, A-levels and entrance exams, along with basic numeracy and literacy tests and, particularly in the case of the law, aiding professionals such as social workers, progress in their field.

Tutoring Approach:

One of the obvious advantages of obtaining the services of a personal tutor is that the student can have the lesson moulded to fit their own needs, rather than being subject to a more generic approach in the classroom. Therefore, I believe that a good personal tutor is one who recognises these needs, understands the students and has the flexibility of approach to adapt accordingly and I, relying upon the feedback of previous students, believe I can offer this. As such, I wouldn't say I necessarily had one style of teaching, rather an open-minded approach to whichever student is being taught.
In order to do this, however, excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required, and I think I am in possession of them. In short, I can bring with me a high level of academic ability along with a friendly and flexible approach to teaching that is entirely student-focused.

About Naoimh:
I am 26 years old and recently married. I live in Haslemere with my husband and two cats.

I am a friendly and outgoing person. I like to exercise and recently run the London Marathon and a triathlon. In my spare time I like to cook and enjoy arts and crafts.

Teaching Experience:

I have recently achieved a PGCE qualification in Primary Teaching from London South Bank University and in 2003 I graduated from UWIC with a 2:1 BSc (Hons) degree in Sports Development. After completing the BSc I spent three years working in the sports marketing industry.

I am experienced at teaching all primary levels (Foundation, Key stage 1 and 2) but have specialised in helping Year 6 pupils with sitting SATs exams and entrance exams in to senior school.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to take a diagnostic approach with the children and discuss what they would like to achieve from their tutoring sessions. In addition, I believe that parents play a key role in a child's education and like to involve parents and keep them informed in their child's development and progress.

My priority is to create a comfortable environment for the child to learn, with my friendly approach and teaching style I can achieve the best results with each child. I like to make the session interactive and fun and often incorporate ICT to keep the lessons compelling and stimulating for the child..

I particularly like to teach the children strategies for learning that best suit their learning styles. This enables them to manage and take control of their own learning.

I am happy to tutor from your home or my home wherever is best environment for the child to learn.

About Gemma:
I have been teaching in Southampton for 7 years and I thoroughly enjoy my job and am always looking for ways to develop my skills further. I am leader of Literacy and upper school and a large part of my role involves coaching teachers in developing their practice and ensuring we are giving the children in our school the best possible opportunities to learn to their full potential.

I feel that I strive to cater for each individual and do this by establishing how a child learns, what they already know and by carefully planning the next steps needed to take them further. I have a calm, approachable manner but set clear expectations for children and encourage all to do their best. A combination of praise and achieving success through supportive teaching means children can feel positive about their learning.

Teaching Experience:

I have particular expertise in teaching Year 6 children and therefore would be able to successfully tutor children approaching SATs tests or those getting ready for entrance exams. However, I am experienced in teaching years 3 to 5 and when I have been a supply teacher have taught all primary aged children. I have also enjoyed tutoring children of various ages.

Tutoring Approach:

I use my expereince and knowledge of all curriculum subjects to deliver high quality, personalised sessions catering for children's individual needs. I feel it is important to use a range of activities to ensure sessions are engaging and motivating. Time is also used carefully and planned, where possible, in collaberation with class teachers and parents.

I currently work for the Local Education Authority in Hackney, the Learning Trust, in Adult Education, with the responsibility of managing learning programmes and quality assuring education provision for adults, including Skills for Life (literacy, numeracy and ESOL).

Teaching Experience:

1. During my time on the PGCE programme, I successfully completed 2 terms of teaching in a secondary school, in Science.

About Vivien:
I am a friendly, outgoing mother of three, with first hand experience of dyslexia, the autistic spectrum, the statementing process and special needs schools. I am particularly passionate about music; and believe that everyone has musical potential. I play the piano, and violin, and I sing and conduct a children's and an adult choir. I have also been very involved in dramatic societies, particularly musical theatre. I'm creative; I enjoy all sorts of artistic activities, from journalling to beadwork, and painting theatre backdrops. In my spare time I am also often to be found playing darts for my local social club team!

Teaching Experience:

I qualified as a teacher in 1995, with a B.Ed(Hons)English, (2:1), from West Sussex Institute of H.E. I spent a year teaching at Corpus Christi RC Primary school in Portsmouth, where I had responsibility for music. I then moved into youthwork for the next 9 years, where I ran homework clubs, music and drama workshops, writing groups, young people's music groups, and was involved in many community drama productions. I was also very involved in pastoral care for young people. My youngest daughter was born with complex special needs, and consequently I have spent the last couple of years supporting her educationally, gaining first hand knowledge of teaching strategies. My eldest child is dyslexic, and I provided extra tuition for him at home until his GCSEs.

Tutoring Approach:

I firmly believe that learning can be, and is fun. It's important to build on what the child/young person does know, not focus on apparent 'failure to know'. I believe that education should be about the whole process, not just perceived academic success, and that we should be fostering a lifelong appetite for learning. An informal delivery style is underpinned by carefully structured planning, that includes regular assessment, so that tutor and pupil alike can be encouraged by visible progress.
