Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Mury: At the present I work as a Researcher at the University of Birmingham. I am keen to travel to student's house or the student can also come to my house. |
Teaching Experience: In the early time of my teaching career, I gave tuition to junior and senior high school students (12-18 years old) and I did this for about 7 years. I have also been teaching undergraduate and master students both abroad and in the UK for 3 years. |
Tutoring Approach: Having gained substantial teaching experience, I believe it is essential that a tutor must put himself in student's shoes in order to understand student's difficulties in studying a new study material. Feedback is critically important as a measure of how well the student can follow the tutor. Normally I get feedback from student by asking questions from the simple one to the difficult one. If the student cannot answer a simple question correctly, it means that I have to repeat it again from the beginning. I do not want to come across that having taught the student for 1-2 hours but they do not learn anything. Observing facial expression of a student does sometimes help me know whether the student understands the material that the tutor teaches. This is particularly useful when teaching passive students as they do not usually interrupt the tutor even though they can not follow them. Empty eyes and blank facial expression of a student requires a tutor not to continue the teaching to a more advanced material as it will be more confusing for the students if he does. If experiencing this, the tutor must stop, and double check how far the student has grabbed the study material and find out which particular subject that the student still cannot understand. Regarding Maths, there are many formulas in the school's text book that the student has to learn them by heart thus make it quite tough for some students. I usually ask the student to memorize just the fundamental/basic formula and teach them how to derive other formulas. So in case they forget the derivative formulas, they can derive them from the basic formula anytime. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Richard: I'm an enthusiastic person with a love for the sciences, a positive end encouraging approach and a desire to inspire recognition in the beauty and importance of science in today's world. Currently studying an MSc degree in Software Engineering with Artificial Intelligence, am in my 3rd year at Edinburgh University School of Informatics department. |
Teaching Experience: During the 2006 Edinburgh International Science Festival I was part of the MaadSkillz event. Aimed at young people and using urban culture to inspire interest in science. This involved using music and sound, a very entertaining and informative showcase. We have since taken this event to schools and science centers across Scotland. In the past I have also helped special needs children with confidence issues in support groups, this is a very useful skill as learning requires a rewarding feeling. |
Tutoring Approach: As mentioned I believe in children being taught the "bigger picture". They should have a motivation for studying their subjects aside for entrance requirement grades. If they see how their skills can be put to use whilst approaching and during university then they will naturally gain a hunger for knowledge. This is something I find very healthy and is an approach to learning inspired by my father, himself an academic - Professor of Chemical Engineering. |

Types of Tutoring: Online
| About Amine: * Think positively about people and encourage others to be positive. * Establishes positive work relationships. * Good communication skills, easily break-the-ice. * Efficient use of time, always plan ahead. * Knowledgeable, patient, with sense of humour. * Commitment and flexibility. |
Teaching Experience: * Teaching assistant at the University. * Teaching course material, assessing, help with solving problems. * Students from different Ethnic and academic backgrounds. |
Tutoring Approach: Without loss of generality, assume a tutee tries to solve a problem in a tutorial session. 1. Determine what the tutee knows and what he does not. 2. Observe the tutee while he solves the problem (e.g. how many times he need to consult course material). 3. Look at the solution. (a) If the solution is correct praise him and ask him to explain why this way of solving and not another one. This tests if he has full understanding or whether his solving of the problem is mechanical. If he cannot find an alternative give hints. (b) If the solution is wrong, ask tutee questions in a way that makes him find out the mistake by himself, so in future exams he has the ability to tell whether his solution is right or wrong before the exam finishes. Identify what kind of ambiguity in his understanding led to this mistake and make sure he has clear understanding. 4. make sure he has the necessary knowledge and problem solving skills to tackle exams. 5. Make solving problems fun rather than a terrific challenge. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Alexander: Hi, I have recently finished all the academic qualifications that entitle me to become a barrister, however I have not yet obtained a pupillage, which is the final apprentice like stage required before I am allowed to practice. As such I have at least a year of freedom and I would like to do a bit of teaching. Prior to studying the law I did my A levels in double maths, physics and chemistry and completed an undergraduate degree in Physics at Imperial College London. So I am more than capable of teaching those subjects to a high level. |
Teaching Experience: While I don't have much specific teaching experience, having only casually tutored a few times while I was at university, I have plenty of experience explaining complicated subjects, both scientific and legal, to lay people. Not only that but I have also had extensive advocacy training. Not only that but both my parents are teachers and so i have been around the profession all my life and I am therefore confident that I will be a very capable teacher. |
Tutoring Approach: There are two main approaches I would use for tutoring and it would depend on the client as to which one would be more appropriate. The first would be for the tutee to ask me about any specific areas that they are having problems with and for me to help them through it by through explanation and then practice in problem solving. The second would be a more general approach where I would dictate the content of the lessons, based on the syllabus, in an attempt to give a more general overview and therefore a better understanding of the subject. Additionally I would at all times, be approachable and try to keep the material as relevant, enjoyable and engaging as possible. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Matthew: I am an experienced tutor, IT technician, musician and event organizer offering my acquired skills to any age group who may require further clarity. Currently studying of my own volition towards further recognized qualifications in IT, Technology and Music as well as writing a guitar method which favors creating music rather than pure technique (although technique is obviously included). I regularly volunteer time organizing and promoting local music events as well as being a local on-call Sound Technician and IT Support Officer. |
Teaching Experience: Peripatetic Music Tuition Since Nov 2004 I have been teaching electric and acoustic guitar in one to one or group lessons from hired teaching rooms in the Academy of Music and Sound, a national educational establishment in central Exeter. Duties include: Writing the vast majority of the teaching materials (,after covering the basics almost every student has a tailored curriculum dependant on their musical taste). Tutoring students through Contemporary Grade 1 - 8 exams. My students have ranged in age from 8 to 62 years old. In addition it is a wonderful role to serve as an outlet for creativity and is distinctly rewarding when a student grasps a topic with enthusiasm, whether it be their favourite song or a new technique. Upon moving house in November 2006 I began teaching from home instead to avoid the Exeter commute and the overheads of room rental. Singer and Performance Development Teacher September 2006 I was asked to work one afternoon a week singing for the Academy Of Music and Sound's student performances as well as advising them on stagecraft, performance and instrument technique. The following term the Academy's singing course began and hence the course's singers filled the role as part of their studies. I have also tutored individuals in the workplace in the use of Microsoft Office applications and Music Software such as Cubase SX and Propellerhead's Reason. Having attained an A grade at Electronics A-level and also currently studying towards a BSc(Hons) in Technology with The Open University as well as MCSE status with Microsoft. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a structured approach to the basics of all subjects available for tuition but once attained (for example in teaching the guitar,) most students require a tempered and tailored approach depending on their most comfortable form of learning as well as the topics of most interest and relevance. A science academic, dedicated musician and disciplined teacher I provide a service which promotes the development of skill-sets mostly without the students awareness of the degree of depth attained. Creating a comfortable atmosphere is also paramount as very few people learn best in a stressed environment. |
