Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Larissa: I am a former writer and editor for New York Moves Magazine, now based in London. I received my BA in the "Great Books" program at St. John's College, a broad-based curriculum of the seminal works in philosophy, literature, history, math, and science. I am about to receive my MA degree in Classical Theatre from Central School of Speech and Drama. |
Teaching Experience: I tutored for a year in New York under the federal "No Child Left Behind" program, and before that, led daycare sessions at the San Francisco Tennis Club, for children ages 1-6 years. |
Tutoring Approach: I examine what work the student is doing in school, where he is having difficulties, and try to determine from where those difficulties stem. I prefer to ask leading questions rather than to merely correct mistakes; I find the student begins to understand more quickly and thoroughly that way. When editing written work, I advise the writer on how to improve the work for clarity and elegance, pointing out structural and stylistic problems, and encouraging the writer to make those changes himself before I offer my own solutions. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Andrew: I am a 28 year old Actor / Teacher, and I take great pleasure in learning new things all the time, and passing my knowledge onto others. Life is one great big education in which we should never stop learning. With this in mind, I am always open to learning things from my students, no matter what their age, this I feel, is the sign of a good teacher. |
Teaching Experience: I have over two years teaching at Secondary (High) School, I have also taught in Secure Units, Pupil Referral Units, Primary School, Nursery School, as well as running Drama workshops for people aged 10 - 50! |
Tutoring Approach: I believe it is important to be sensitive to the individual needs of your student(s), no two people are the same or learn the same way. If you are open to your students individual needs then it is easier to teach them as you know what angle you are coming from, what works for one doesn't work for all. It is important to empower your student with confidence and praise where necessary, and make sure any criticism is constructive. A lifetime's worth of patience doesn't go amiss either! |

| About Beth: I am 27 years old and have just moved to York from Australia, with my husband. I love to read and spend time with my friends and family. |
Teaching Experience: I am a qualified Primary School teacher, and have 9 years experience working with children from 6 weeks old up to 15 years old. I have a wide variety of teaching methods to help students develop their learning skills and succeed in the classroom. My expertise in Maths is in teaching strategies for the 4 number operations - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. I have a very strong background in Literacy learning. I have many skills to assist students to improve their reading and comprehension ability, increase their vocabulary and improve their spelling. |
Tutoring Approach: I approach tutoring with a strong focus on identifying the needs of the tutee, and responding to the learning styles that suit them best. For younger students I prefer to make the learning experiences 'hands-on', and so I bring a number of learning tools to assist them to problem solve. I also like to leave my students with some visual reminders, and so prepare laminated cards that they can keep, and use to study until my next lesson with them. |

View Jo's Profile

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Jo: I'm a recent graduate from the University of Chichester with a 2:1 in English with Creative Writing (BA Hons). I'm flexible with my availability both during the week and at weekends, and I'm willing to travel reasonable distances within the Portsmouth area, i.e. Chichester, Fareham etc. I'd prefer to tutor students in their own homes. |
Teaching Experience: I am Trinity TESOL certified and have experience teaching English as a language to both children and adults. I also have experience tutoring children of secondary school age and knowledge of GCSE marking criteria. If your child is struggling at school or college, even one or two hours a week can make a huge difference to them; and if there is a particular piece of coursework they are having trouble with, even a one-off session can help them greatly, and I would be happy to help them not only with English Language and Literature but also with any English related subject (including, for example, Drama or Media), and to assist with the proof-reading and improvement of any coursework essays or reports. I'm also available for exam revision at any level. If you have Primary or Junior school-aged children, I can help them strengthen their numeracy and literacy skills, as a surprising number of children do find themselves struggling when they make the step up to senior school. |
Tutoring Approach: My strength as a teacher has always been in one-on-one work or tutoring small groups, particularly with pupils who may be struggling due to circumstances beyond their control. I strongly believe that all students are capable of improving their work with a little extra help and attention that it simply isn't possible for classroom teachers to give. One or two marks can really make a difference in grades (particularly at GCSE level, for example, where correct punctuation and grammar can be worth up to six marks) and as stated above, even a one-off session concentrating on a particular piece of coursework can make a huge difference to some students. I am extremely patient and very aware that all children learn differently, and willing to work with the student to find out the best way for me to help them, rather than expect to tutor everyone in the same way. |

| About Mary: I am an experienced and fully qualified teacher of English (Key Stage 3, GCSE or As/A2 level English or equivalent examinations), English as a Foreign Language examinations (IELTS or Cambridge First, Advanced or Proficiency). I also offer support for essay writing or study skills at university level. I have also previously studied Theatre Studies, Drama, Media and Dance, so I can teach these subjects for GCSE / A level as well. I live in Shoreham-by-Sea and conduct lessons either in my home or I visit you. Should I need to visit there may be an additional charge for petrol and /or parking, depending on where you live. I have also recently set up teaching on Skype. If you are interested in learning on Skype you need a fairly new computer, so that the memory is enough and a webcam. Windows Vista, XP or the equivalent Mac is best. If you are not sure of using the computer for this but are still interested in lessons please contact me, as I offer a free 20 minute introductory session in advance of the course and am happy to spend some time discussing the concept of learning on Skype, so that you can decide if it is the right option for you. I also run a service where I can look at work e-mailed to me and comment on it, even if you do not actually want lessons conducted via Skype. Prices depend on what work you are sending and how long it will take me to do the critique. I take work up to degree level for English or related subjects. I also have an MA in Creative Writing and have had poems published. I am able to give critiques for Poetry that you have written. I charge 20 to comment on up to six poems. |
Teaching Experience: I have been teaching English for over 10 years. This has been both in Further Education and at private colleges. I also have extensive experience of one-to one tutoring and also teach Theatre Studies, Media Studies and Drama . |
Tutoring Approach: I have a friendly manner and approach to tutoring and believe that a good working relationship with the student is important. I will not ever cancel or alter your lesson times unless I am taken so ill that I can't get to you. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Charlotte: I am a creative and caring individual currently studying for a masters degree in Dramatherapy. I have worked as a writer on a national publication and am currently juggling acting jobs alongside my studies. I am an avid reader with particular skill for critically reviewing, creative writing and spelling and grammar. I have vast drama and theatre experience, both on and off stage/screen. I have many years experience of working with children of all ages. |
Teaching Experience: Whilst still at school myself I taught the year 7&8 drama group, more recently I have worked as a drama teacher and play writing tutor to teenagers participating in a summer camp at California State University, Northridge in LA. Also in L.A. I taught drama and theatre to disadvantaged teenagers with a company called City At Peace Los Angeles. I have vast experience of teaching reading to early years and primary aged children. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a warm and friendly approach following the ethos of positive reinforcement. Rather than focus on negative components (e.g. homework not done, spellings not looked at) I seek to reinforce the positive in each individual I work with, whether this be a vast improvement in their work, an insightful observation or simply turning up to the session. I am firm but not harsh and ultimately very approachable. I will set up boundaries and aim to have fun in the tutoring sessions to boost capacity to learn. I can use dramatic techniques to boost self-confidence, explore character and enhance learning. |

| About Meghali: I am a person who enjoys meeting and interacting with people, and have particular experience with children. My love for Theatre and Drama has developed me into an articulate and expressive individual with good communication skills, and I continue to be a part of various theatrical activities at Durham University. I consider myself culturally sensitive, and find beauty in the diversity different locations have to offer. I feel I am able to adapt to new surroundings and challenging situations very well, having lived in many different parts of the world. Consecutively, cooking is another interest of mine, and I take delight in experimenting with cuisine from different countries. I am an ardent traveller, and have predominantly enjoyed visiting a variety of resorts in India, Switzerland, Italy, Oman, and historic spots of London and Paris. |
Teaching Experience: I have attended a fortnightly reading session with Year 3 students at my old school, as well as having done volunteer work with a junior school for their Sports' Day.
