About Mark:
I have enjoyed the benefits of special tutoring throughout my career with some amazing results. Doors have opened and I have met great people.

Personal Development Education has given me the chance to work at a level I could not have imagined.

Teaching Experience:

With over 20 years experience in teaching in adult and community based learning, on a personal level and in Colleges, Schools and occasionally Universities, there is a wealth of knowledge, skill and fun behind the face.

I also write and edit qualifications, design materials and develop programmes for training providers, in Citizenship, Business Skills, Essential Skills for life and a range of specific topics. I love to learn and enjoy the opportunities to support learning.

Tutoring Approach:

Learning is fun. Whilst a serious goal is always set the journey is always tailored to the needs of the Tutee.

I use a simple milestone approach, celebrate achievement whenever we can and find practical ways of using the new found knowledge in everyday situations.

About Jennie:
As a young and dynamic teacher with a genuine passion for my subject, I enjoy spending time in the classroom and sharing my enthusiasm with others. I am easy going and understand the flexibility that is essential when tutoring. As a committed and responsible individual, I can assure complete integrity and honesty in my tutoring.

There is no mountain too great if tackled with the right approach, positivity, some hard work .... and a cup of tea and a biscuit!

Teaching Experience:

I am currently Head of Psychology Department at a thriving Sixth Form. I have taught a range of exam boards, and am willing to tutor students studying for any exam specification. The advantage of being (relatively!) recently trained is that I am up-to-date with the latest specifications, and as an examiner for an exam board I am familiar with what the exam boards are looking for.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that patience and understanding are key to being a successful tutor. These personal skills, coupled with a sound academic background, are integral to my approach to one-to-one tutoring. Every student is different, and I can tailor the sessions to suit each individual.

About Ruth:
I am the Head of Psychology at a secondary School in Bristol, I enjoy my subject and spend a lot of my spare time reading around theories in Psychology as well as attending psychology conventions and conferences. I enjoy helping students who either need some help with the understanding of the subject or who needs to learn different techniques to help them remember all the theories and studies that need to be remembered for the course. As well as teaching enjoy keeping fit, diving, climbing and i have just taken up belly dancing. I also have a keen interest in Egyptology. I enjoy travelling in the summer holidays, usually in the Africa region. I recently took 8 students to Botswana and Zambia to complete a community project of creating a playground for a primary school.

I have been teaching for 7 years based in the same School. I have been running the Psychology department for 3 years and i manage a team of 3. I teach both GCSE and A level Psychology and have knowledge of both specification A and B AQA

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is to find out what particular areas the student is struggling with and go through these with the student. I have a variety of memory techniques that can be taught to the student to help them remember the studies and theories. Past exam questions and the wording of questions is an area that is focused on. Mind-mapping, key cards and condensing information. It is important to make the tutoring session enjoyable as well as learning with the use of a variety of techniques.

About Robert:
I have recently finished my Masters degree and am currently working towards a PHD. I have a passion for education, and specifically politics and philosophy as subjects essential to any young adult.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored successfully for two years. I have also taught on a part time basis in a Large London College.

Tutoring Approach:

I have always approached education and learning in two ways: the importance of the subject and achievement in examination. I feel that it is necessary to explore the relevance and importance of it outside of the directly examined area. I think for all subjects it is essential to pay attention to the broader issues around it in the media, in society and in history. Through this method not only are avenues of interest opened, but a more holistic learning made possible.

Alongside this it is necessary to keep focused upon the primary end of education in our times: Results. As achievement is measured in examination results, preparation in this area should play a central role. I always believe exam practice and learning with exam questions in mind is the safest and most effective way of guaranteeing results. This does not mean blindly learning exam answers but rather enabling learning through looking at exam skills and technique.

About Piers:
My name is Piers von Berg. I graduated in 2000 from St Andrews University with first class honours in International Relations. I recently completed a Graduate Diploma in Law and Bar Vocational Course at City Law School, London; in my second year I tutored Criminal Law at City Law School. From 2000-2004 I worked for the George Soros Foundation lecturing conflict studies and globalisation.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught international politics for four years and criminal law for one year at university level. I have taught first and second year undergraduates and have much sympathy for those grappling with these subjects for the first time. I have also tutored final year and Masters students.

I have taught a lot of basic and advanced essay writing skills for social sciences and law (including legal problem questions).

I currently provide tutorials on a private basis. Please note - I have just registered with UK Tutors and I am awaiting my CRB check (I have no previous convictions).

Tutoring Approach:

My first aim is to identify at what stage students are at in their studies and what tasks they have as regards exams or coursework. I would then discuss areas of difficulty with the student, and with younger pupils, their parents. I then discuss and agree with the student how we will go forward together to address these needs.

At university level, I find that law and politics students often have difficulty with particular topics which need simple and precise explanations (diagrams also come in useful). For example, telling the differences between subjective and objective recklessness in criminal law, or between neo and classical realism in international relations. In addition, there is no substitute for exam and essay practice, and I always follow this up with extensive and constructive feedback, ideally in discussion with the student to build confidence levels.

At A-level social science (e.g. history and politics), there are similar issues such as confidence in exams, exam technique, and discovering what approaches turn a B plus into a strong A grade. For example, learning how to strike balances in "discuss" type essay questions or, being able to use "spider" or "fish" charts to organise thoughts and ideas before writing. Again, practice questions are essential to developing technique and confidence, especially when followed with constructive and affirmative feedback.

At GCSE level, I understand a need for shorter and more carefully managed tasks to build up confidence and understanding. For example, 30-40 word answers to several questions on a set text, or a longer 300-400 composition on a particular event or period. This is prefaced by an oral explanation, discussion and question and answer session, as well as set reading. Writing and research tasks are then followed by assessment, discussion, feedback and often, repeat tasks.

Across the age-groups I find that identifying mistakes must go hand-in-hand with inviting or suggesting alternatives. Most importantly, students thrive where a teacher can convey an enthusiasm for the subject and find ways to engage the student's interest and attention.
