Personal Description:

I am a professional music teacher and composer, a graduate of the Royal College of Music, the University of Oxford and the Cracow Academy of Music. 

I teach classical guitar, mandolin, ukulele, lute, composition, theory, harmony, counterpoint/fugue, orchestration, sight-reading/general musicianship, from beginner to professional, and have two decades' experience in conducting and ensemble coaching. 

I have been teaching for over 35 years and I am the author of the best selling book: 'Play Classical Guitar' (three editions, including Spanish translation).

I can prepare students for grade exams, ABRSM or Trinity, as preferred.

As an award-winning, published, recorded composer I have been commissioned by the London Mozart Players, enSEmble 26, the Erato Piano Trio, First Born Films, Ensemble ISIS.

Teaching Experience:

Alongside my private teaching practice of over 35 years I have also taught at Virgo Fidelis Prep School (Upper Norwood), the Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School (Holland Park) and am currently teaching guitar at the Bromley Conservatoire.

Tutoring Approach:

I have taught literally hundreds of students, and I am an expert in finding the most natural approach for each person. Everyone learns differently, and everyone is musical - it just requires the right approach and techniques to bring this out.  
 
From beginner to advanced levels - each step requires a particular set of techniques and musical understanding; I also teach to play the guitar first - only then when they feel familiar with the instrument I introduce musical notation (as per the Flamenco and Suzuki methods).  

I believe it is essential that one has broad knowledge of other instruments and repertoire to excel in one's own specialism. While I take my work very seriously, I ensure that the student enjoys learning and quickly develops a love for music; this is the best and, actually, the only sustainable way to get students to practice.
