Jessica - Edinburgh tutor

Information About Jessica:

Personal Description:

I am a student at Edinburgh University, beginning my graduate Law LLB in September. Having gained experience as an administrator for the Scottish exam board, I am now looking to continue using my passion for academia and humanities in tutoring. I have learnt under a mix of the Scottish and English exam system, studying GCSEs in my fourth year and Highers and Advanced Highers across 5th and 6th year. I went on to graduate in 2025 with an MA in Philosophy and English Literature.

My work for the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) has allowed me to understand exams not only as a student, but as an administrator. Having spent years on the other side of the process, the work has given me a completely different perspective on what markers and awarding bodies are actually looking for, and where students trip themselves up without realising; these are things like missing coursework, malpractice and over-teaching from schools. For A grades it takes not just knowing the material, but knowing the system.

Tutoring Approach:

Does essay writing seem overwhelming? Do you struggle to turn ideas and texts into clear arguments? My aim is to make the process of writing an essay simplified. The big ideas that come along in English novels, Philosophy and Religion can be bewildering, but I will guide you through planning, writing, and editing in a way that reduces confusion and builds your academic confidence. I love these thought-provoking subjects! However, I struggled with others at school; I am therefore understanding how hard it can be for students to get a grip of certain techniques.

Success in these subjects is about learning strategies of thinking. Many students don't realise that essay-based subjects assess how you answer a question just as much as what you know. My experience working on an exam board has shown me this. We will aim to make writing more approachable by teaching you how to unpack questions, develop strong thesis statements and structure paragraphs effectively. Eventually, this will become second nature!

We will plan practice essays, and look at the function of the questions that they answer, as well as the content that they assess. After this, we will progress to writing the essays, and talk about how to structure sentences/paragraphs within our plans. If we are working towards an exam, we will look at practice papers and the recurring/predictable questions that occur, so that we have a solid understanding of what to expect, and how to be confident in answering questions to meet these expectations.
