Madeleine - tutor

Information About Madeleine:

Personal Description:

Enjoying maths and physics at school has led me to graduating university with a first class masters in civil engineering. On paper it may look like I am a maths wizz, but it wasn't always easy. I remember was I was younger crying over my maths homework at the kitchen table, my dad asking me what I don't understand, my answer 'everything'. It took lots of perseverance and patience, going at my own pace and learning how my brain learned best. Because of this, I understand what it feels like to be 'bad at maths' but still keep going and trying and eventually being quite good and enjoying it!

Physics has always been the most fascinating subject to me. It has been a great challenge to try and understand how the forces around us work. Unfortunately physics can be delivered in a very boring way at school. With enthusiasm, real life examples, and looking beyond the text book for wider understanding, physics will become a much more exciting subject through my classes!

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored KS2 students in maths in the past. At university I tutored students in Advanced Geotechnical Engineering.

Tutoring Approach:

Some students think that they are just simply not good at maths, and its not their thing. This is not the case. They just need to be given the knowledge and skills in a different way to what they are used to at school.

Initially I will go over fundamental knowledge with the student to identify their gaps in understanding.

I will prepare every lesson, tailored specifically to the student and their needs. I will use different tools to understand what works best for them e.g. games, videos, quizzes, active recall, worked examples, textbooks exercises.

I prefer not to give the student homework, but where this may be necessary it will be limited.

I want my lessons to be low pressure environments where the students feel comfortable to ask questions, tell me when they are lost, and go at their own pace, with a helpful nudge here and there.
