Personal Description:
I am a dedicated and empathetic professional with twenty years' experience of teaching Classics to secondary school students in the independent sector. My experience in education enhances my ability to communicate with clarity, compassion and purpose across diverse settings and I have developed an understanding for how children learn and progress. I enjoy working with young people and developing their enthusiasm and fascination with the ancient world by telling them anecdotes and interesting titbits to fuel their imaginations. As an avid reader, I love diving into contemporary fiction, literature and history to discover new ideas and perspectives.
Teaching Experience:
With 19 years of experience teaching in the independent sector, I have guided hundred of students through every stage of their Classical journey - from their very first steps in introductory Latin and Greek to top grades at GCSE / A-level and preparation for Classics at Oxbridge. I have experience as a tutor in various capacities and an examiner for AQA and OCR.
However, my approach goes far beyond rote memorisation and past papers. I believe the ancient world comes alive when we make it relevant by showing links between ancient and modern civilisations and drilling down into fascinating etymology for example.
Tutoring Approach:
As a Classics specialist in Latin, Classical Greek and Classical Civilisation, I bring the ancient world to life by bridging the gap between antiquity and our modern lives. My teaching style is engaging and adaptable - tailored to the unique age, goals and personality of each student. I transform traditional vocabulary and grammar acquisition from a chore into a challenge, using innovative educational platforms, making rote learning genuinely engaging and fun. Leveraging the power of cultural capitalism, I connect ancient literature, history and philosophy to today's world, showing students how classical roots still shape our modern ideas, art and language. By curating captivating, contextualised original materials, I help students not only master exam specifications and language mechanics, but also fall in love with the vivid stories and vibrant history of the ancient Mediterranean.
