Rachel - Thatcham tutor

Information About Rachel:

Personal Description:

I am an experienced qualified teacher with over twelve years of classroom experience across the full primary age range, from EYFS to Year 6, alongside extensive one-to-one tutoring from Key Stage 2 through to GCSE level. I hold a B.Sc. (Hons) in Psychology and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), and have particular strengths in building confidence, supporting pupils with SEND, and helping children who may find learning difficult to access in a traditional classroom environment.

My approach is calm, supportive and highly personalised. I believe strong relationships are at the heart of successful learning, and I work hard to ensure children feel comfortable, understood and able to engage without fear of getting things wrong. I have extensive experience supporting pupils with a wide range of needs, including autism, ADHD, anxiety, EAL and children with behaviour or confidence difficulties.

While I have supported many pupils to achieve high academic outcomes - including 11+ success, Greater Depth achievement and strong GCSE results - my main focus is always helping each child make meaningful progress from their individual starting point. For some pupils this may mean aiming for top grades, while for others it may simply be building confidence, closing gaps, or learning how to access education more successfully.

Parents often comment on my patience, organisation and ability to explain things clearly and adaptively. I aim to make sessions engaging, structured and responsive to the needs of the individual child, helping them not only improve academically but also feel more positive and confident about learning overall.

Teaching Experience:

I have over twelve years of teaching experience within a mainstream primary school setting, teaching every year group from EYFS through to Year 6. During this time I have developed extensive experience adapting teaching to meet a wide range of academic, emotional and behavioural needs, including supporting pupils with SEND, EAL, anxiety and behaviour that challenges.

Alongside my classroom teaching, I have worked as a private tutor since 2015, supporting pupils across Key Stages 2, 3 and 4 in both Maths and English, including GCSE Maths preparation and 11+ support. My tutoring experience has included pupils working significantly below age-related expectations, pupils lacking confidence or engagement with learning, and pupils aiming for higher attainment and exam success.

I have particular strengths in:

* Building strong, trusting relationships with children
* Supporting pupils with SEND and SEMH needs
* Behaviour management and engagement
* Identifying gaps in understanding and adapting teaching quickly
* Breaking learning down into manageable, accessible steps
* Developing confidence and resilience alongside academic progress

I have also held subject leadership roles in Computing and MFL, mentored trainee teachers, and created teaching resources and lesson sequences that have been shared across my school federation as examples of good practice.

My teaching style is calm, structured and responsive, with a strong focus on helping children feel successful and capable in their learning.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is centred around building confidence, trust and a positive relationship with learning. I understand that every child is different, and I tailor sessions carefully to each pupil's individual needs, strengths and starting points. For some children this may mean stretching and challenging them academically, while for others it may be about rebuilding confidence, reducing anxiety around learning, or helping them access education in a way that feels manageable and successful.

I aim to create a calm, supportive environment where children feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and working at their own pace. I break learning down into clear, manageable steps and adapt explanations and activities depending on how a child responds within the session. My background in both classroom teaching and one-to-one tutoring allows me to identify gaps in understanding quickly and adjust my teaching style accordingly.

I place a strong emphasis on relationship building and understanding the whole child, particularly for pupils who may have SEND, SEMH needs, low confidence, or previous negative experiences of school. I believe children make the best progress when they feel safe, understood and genuinely supported.

Sessions are structured and purposeful, but also flexible and responsive. I regularly communicate with parents about progress, strengths, areas for development and strategies that may help support learning more widely. My overall aim is not only to improve academic outcomes, but to help children feel more confident, capable and positive about themselves as learners.
