Mariam - Walsall tutor

Information About Mariam:

Personal Description:

With over 10 years of teaching and tutoring experience, I have developed a strong understanding of how to support students who struggle with English and GCSE Sciences. Throughout my career, I have worked with a wide range of learners, including those for whom English is an additional language, and I am highly familiar with the challenges they face in accessing subject content and expressing their understanding.

I specialise in breaking down complex scientific ideas into clear, accessible steps, while also supporting students in developing the language skills needed to succeed. I am particularly skilled at identifying gaps in both knowledge and understanding, and I adapt my teaching to meet each student's individual needs.

Building confidence is at the heart of my approach. I create a positive and supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and actively participating. My lessons are interactive and engaging, incorporating discussion, questioning, and hands-on activities to keep students involved and motivated.

By combining strong subject knowledge with an understanding of language barriers, I help students not only improve academically but also grow in confidence. Over time, this enables them to become more independent learners who are better prepared to succeed in their GCSE exams and beyond.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching style in ESL and GCSE Sciences is rooted in clarity, inclusivity, and building student confidence through structured support and active engagement. I prioritise creating a classroom environment where all learners feel comfortable participating, regardless of their language proficiency or prior academic attainment.

When teaching ESL learners, I focus on simplifying complex language without diluting the subject content. I use clear instructions, visual aids, modelling, and repetition to ensure understanding. Key vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited regularly, often through dual coding, word banks, and sentence stems. I also encourage speaking and listening through pair work and guided discussion, helping students develop both conversational and academic English in a supportive setting.

In GCSE Sciences, I adopt a scaffolded approach to break down challenging concepts into manageable steps. I use practical examples, real-life applications, and demonstrations to make abstract ideas more accessible. For ESL students especially, I emphasise the language of science-such as command words, key terminology, and exam-style phrasing-so they can confidently interpret questions and structure their answers effectively.

Assessment for learning is central to my practice. I regularly check for understanding through questioning, mini whiteboards, and low-stakes quizzes, allowing me to adapt my teaching to meet students' needs. I provide targeted feedback that focuses on both scientific accuracy and language development, helping students improve holistically.

Overall, my teaching style combines high expectations with strong support. I aim to equip students not only with subject knowledge but also with the language skills and confidence they need to succeed in exams and beyond.

Tutoring Approach:

I break down complex ideas into clear, manageable steps and use a variety of strategies-such as modelling, guided practice, and questioning-to support understanding. I prioritise clarity and encourage students to ask questions freely, creating a supportive environment where they feel comfortable making mistakes and learning from them.

A key aspect of my tutoring is developing strong foundational skills. I focus not only on content knowledge but also on exam techniques, problem-solving strategies, and, where relevant, subject-specific language. I regularly revisit key concepts to reinforce learning and ensure long-term retention.

I also place strong emphasis on active participation. Rather than simply explaining, I encourage students to think critically, explain their reasoning, and apply their knowledge independently. This helps build confidence and prepares them to tackle unfamiliar questions.

Ongoing assessment is embedded throughout my sessions. I use targeted questions, quick checks, and practice tasks to monitor progress and adjust my teaching accordingly. Feedback is clear, constructive, and focused on specific next steps so students know exactly how to improve.

Ultimately, my goal as a tutor is not only to help students achieve their academic targets but also to develop their confidence, resilience, and ability to learn independently.
