Nick - Tooting tutor

Information About Nick:

Personal Description:

I am currently completing my PhD in Political Science at the London School of Economics, examining how digital technology influences human behaviour. I love making sense of complex problems, identifying solutions, and communicating my findings. My research identifies and frames emerging policy issues - such as the impact of social media design on political discourse - in ways that offer practical, data-informed solutions. I have been awarded external funding on the strength of my study proposals and their relevance to 'real-world' applications.

Through the application of a wide range of theoretical, experimental, computational, and statistical techniques, I produce robust insights which inform concrete recommendations. I'm comfortable with diverse methodological approaches such as quantitative text analysis, machine learning, and social network analysis, alongside randomised control trials and surveys. I regularly use R and Python, and have basic knowledge of SQL and Tableau.

With a professional background in both traditional and social media, I have a proven track record of communicating complex topics in a clear and compelling manner to a range of audiences. I have appeared on ITV News at Ten, spoken on various podcasts, written blogs for non-specialist audiences, and presented papers at international conferences.

Teaching Experience:

During my doctoral studies, I have been fortunate enough to deliver award-winning teaching, across several different modules, to talented Undergraduate and Master's students at the LSE. In 2022, I was nominated for both the LSE Class Teaching Award and the LSE Student Union Teaching Excellence Award. In 2023 and 2024, I won LSE Class Teaching Awards for GV101: Introduction to Political Science.

This immensely-rewarding role has involved exploring complex topics, articulating some of the world's most pressing political challenges, while inspiring students to develop novel, evidence-based public policy solutions. During my MRes studies, I was a private one-to-one tutor in both Politics and Sociology for A-level students.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a friendly and approachable tutor, and I aim to make every lesson I teach equally enjoyable and rewarding.

I tailor my approach to fit each individual student's goals, aims, and abilities. Having been either studying or working professionally in the field of politics and social sciences for the past 25 years, I take pride in drawing upon my wealth of experience to support struggling students. I also volunteer with Merton Saints BMX Club, where I help run sessions for young people from lower-income areas or with SEND needs. This has developed my ability to connect with children from a range of backgrounds and help them overcome their own individual challenges.
