Sal - Mortlake tutor
Information About Sal:
Personal Description:
I am lively and enthusiastic and encourage students to take part in lessons, by using the Cambridge University communicative teaching methods of subject discussion, discovery brainstorming, free thinking, building confidence through learning sophisticated vocabulary and ideas, as well as helping them to write eloquently by showing them what "good looks like" which they really enjoy.
I switched to teaching 18 years ago and it's the best decision I ever made, as I lived overseas internationally teaching at schools and universities before I came back to London in 2012, to complete my research on anthropology, culture and folklore dance in South America. So my passion is Latin American dance and music. I paint colourful bodies of works to raise money for Amazon rainforest, where I went on my first trip to Brazil. I've always got a story to tell Student to help him feel relaxed and at home and I specialise in second language, families, bilingual students and neuro divergent learners who need different learning styles to understand the academic writing. I'm always learning and studying at the moment I'm preparing for my English language diploma with Cambridge university.
Teaching Experience:
Highly experienced English, English for entrance exams, such as the 11+13+ with scholarships and History tutor with over 2,000 hours in 18 years post Cambridge University certification in teaching English and my first degree in English and history with a postgraduate diploma in learning and training and 24 years Steiner Waldorf teaching in child development.
Tutoring Approach:
Lessons are dynamic, engaging and active, where we work together on learning activities depending on the subject - that cover creative, narrative, multi/media and discursive writing, 11+ and KS 2: verbal reasoning techniques; reading comprehensions; expanding vocabulary; grammar and; syllable sound spelling for second language learners. For the older students KS3 that also do GCSE or A-level we work on answering exam questions and learning the skills of language analysis, figurative language techniques, structuring, planning and writing academic essays. Essays are planned and structured in the lessons. We use the iterative and formative learning method whereby the student will complete and write up the tasks and essays for homework. Then we will edit them together until they are of the advanced level required for exams. Where is work together so that students understand which areas they need to improve.
