Personal Description:

I'm a 36 year old married lady.
From the age of 5 I've been teaching, admittedly it was to my teddies back then, but by the age of 15 I was teaching life saving skills in my lifesaving club. I love building children's confidence and seeing that 'light bulb' moment when it all falls into place.
I love the outdoors, cold water swimming, crafting, walking my dog and baking.

Teaching Experience:

I've been teaching for 12 years in both London and Cornwall and have taught in a variety of settings, including outdoor education and online from Nursery - Year 6. I have been lucky enough to be able to and have had the absolute pleasure of teaching children with a range of behaviour / special educational needs.
Over this time I have trained many new teachers, led Phonics, Reading and Science.
I elected to be part of the English Hub programme to introduce Read, Write, Inc. phonics into the school I was working at and trained all of the staff. This resulted in an increase from 57% pass rate to 85% in the year 1 phonics screening check.
I also introduced 'reading for pleasure' through a variety of events, approaches to teaching guided reading and parental engagement.
I would say that my speciality subject is phonics and reading, but as with all primary teachers, we can teach all areas.

Tutoring Approach:

Your child needs to feel safe, relaxed and happy in order to learn, so I tutor through a range of engaging games and activities. Often children learn best when they don't realise they're learning. I will endeavour to get to know your child's interests / learning styles and tailor the learning and discussions around them. I am an advocate for outdoor learning.
We will start with an assessment and agree target areas to focus on with you as parents. Formative ongoing assessment will take place in each session and new targets will be set once achieved. The learning will be in line with the national curriculum and where possible, in line with the topics that your child is learning about in their class. We will aim to fill any gaps in knowledge and challenge in a supportive manner.

Qualifications:

• PGCE in Early and Primary Education with QTS - London South Bank Uni
• BA Hons in Journalism - Falmouth Uni
• Certificate of Higher Education in Education and Media Communications - Bath Spa Uni
