Glenn - Brighton tutor
Information About Glenn:
Personal Description:
Do you need help with arts and humanities assignments (especially art history and film studies)? Do you want an introduction to film or the history of art, for their own sake or as an informal platform for further study? Or are you more interested in visual and critical analysis of artwork? I can help you with all of these. Depending on your needs, I can introduce these subjects, or I can help you to strengthen and enhance your analysis, use theory well, and present your work successfully.
A large part of my teaching has been aimed at students of art practice, but not exclusively so. While my main specialisms cover painting of the early twentieth century to the present. I am particularly interested in areas over overlap between 'high' and 'low' culture, and in cross-fertilisations among media (e.g cinema and painting).
I am also a practicing artist, and I believe this gives me valuable added insight technical, material and stylistic concerns which supplement historical and contextual matters. In addition to the above I have published a number of academic texts, and have much experience of public speaking, delivering conference papers, editing and blogging.
Teaching Experience:
I hold a Phd in film studies, an MA in visual culture and a BA in fine art. Over 25 years, I have devoted myself to teaching in these and related subjects to post-18 students of all abilities, mainly at:
- The University of Sussex (film studies)
- Bath Spa College of Art and Design (Fine Art Contextual Studies)
- University of Brighton, (Senior Lecturer in Art and Design History/).
I have also worked for the University of the West of England, Wimbledon School of Art, the Workers' Educational Association and the Centre for Continuing and Adult Education (University of Sussex).
Tutoring Approach:
I love providing one-to-one-tutorials, seminars and lectures, as well as supervising written and other assignments. I usually combine my delivery with open-ended but focused discussion, and as often as possible seek to engage the artwork directly. My general rule is to begin with our own experience of the artwork, and then to proceed outwards towards contexts, critical readings and theories.
I consider my main strengths to be:
- diversity and breadth of knowledge
- the ability where useful to put 'theory and practice' together
- the ability to teach accessibly and in different registers to diverse learners
- providing helpful and empathetic support for students.
