Personal Description:

Qualified teacher, 26 years experience teaching Economics, Maths and Business Studies in the UK. Senior examiner at both A level and GCSE (Economics) for two different exam boards. Durham university Economics graduate.

Prior to completing my PGCE I spent 1 year as a volunteer teacher in Kenya.

I have worked with students taking all the major exam boards including home educated students.

I will be leaving school in July 2022 to tutor full time so will have daytime availability

Teaching Experience:

26 years as a full time teacher of Economics and Business Studies A level as well as Maths GCSE.

Tutoring mostly online but pre covid in person mostly A level but also GCSE Economics

I have worked with all levels of students - those who need pushing to an A* as well as those who are struggling with the basic concepts.

My role as an examiner for 20 years (A level and GCSE) has given me insight into how to approach and answer exam questions to maximise marks. I have experience of the common errors and can help students avoid these when preparing for exams.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a patient tutor who works with students and parents to achieve their goals and improve confidence in either subject knowledge or exam technique. All students learn in different ways and are looking for different outcomes.
Some students have good subject knowledge and want to focus on exam technique. Others would like me to go through topics they have covered at school or give detailed feedback on essays they have written. Over the summer holidays many students want to get ahead with the topics they will be covering during the next school year.
I use zoom and spend a large amount of the lessons sharing an online whiteboard which I use for diagrams and notes. I can add notes/questions to the whiteboard in advance if I'm given notice of the topic. If the student does not know what they want to do beforehand that is not a problem, we can have a quick chat about the objectives for that lesson at the start - this may be exam questions or topics.
After the lesson the notes made on the whiteboard are available for the student.
During lessons, as well as explaining concepts I will be asking the student questions throughout to test their understanding and keep them engaged.
If requested I can set homework which we will go through at the start of the next lesson. Extra work between sessions helps consolidate learning.
