Emma - Stockport tutor
Information About Emma:
Personal Description:
I am a chartered Clinical Psychologist with extensive experience in teaching psychology, critical thinking and research. I have a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Lancaster University. Before this I achieved a distinction in a Master's degree in Psychology of Education at Manchester University.
My bread-and-butter work is undertaking extensive assessments and psychological formulations for people and families with complex needs. I have worked with people with atypical neurological presentations like autism and ADHD, for example, as well as people experiencing substance dependency or acute physical health problems that are impacting on their wellbeing.
I have an advanced knowledge of neuropsychology, behavioural difficulties, relational and systemic issues. I have experience of undertaking research and audits into various areas of practice including the application of UK law in mental health services. On this latter topic I have contributed to a book for practitioners, published in 2020. I have experience in using quantitative and qualitative research methods and publishing research findings.
Teaching Experience:
I am experienced in teaching post-graduate students including vocational trainees in psychology and social work. I also have experience teaching adult learners, in professional and informal settings. In addition, I currently provide academic mentoring to undergraduate students across the Northwest.
I have taught across a range of topics from research methods to neuropsychology, attachment, social psychology and moral philosophy. More broadly, I have taught and mentored young people in academic writing and critical skills.
Tutoring Approach:
I have a sound understanding of educational theory and experience in applying this in context for over a decade with learners. I have strong interpersonal skills developed through professional practice and grounded in my personal values of employing warmth, encouragement and positive motivation with anyone I work with. Core to my approach is being student centred: being flexible with my time; tailoring learning to meet individual needs and seeking regular feedback to ensure my approach is helping people to meet their goals. Learning should be stimulating and rewarding in itself as well as helping people to achieve strong grades and qualifications.
