Information About Jay:

Personal Description:

I am a life-long learner and am keen to share my enthusiasm for learning with others. I have a Bachelors degree from a top USA engineering university and a PhD from a New Zealand university in Information Science. I have always enjoyed doing Maths and Physics, and I know how to inspire students in these subjects. I am available at most times during the week. When I'm not doing Maths and Physics, I enjoy playing Ultimate Frisbee and squash and going camping and hiking.

Teaching Experience:

I have over twenty-five years of experience in education at secondary, college, and university level. I have provided tutoring to students for over ten years.

Tutoring Approach:

I start with a student's own understanding of a subject and build from there. I like to be hands on in my approach, and I get the student to take responsibility for their learning. I build from their understanding and quickly find places where the student may have misconceptions or missing blocks of information. As my PhD was all about machine learning and biofeedback, I am able to use both of these to help students find ways to segment information and build on their own strengths through better organisational skills. Give me five minutes with a student discussing their own understanding, and it will be worth hours spent in a classroom during whole class instruction.
