Information About Simon:

Personal Description:

I have been living in Sidcup, south-east London, with my wife and two daughters for the past eight years. Until recently I was working as a deputy head in a local primary school. When I'm not working I either like to be on my allotment fighting weeds and slugs or keeping fit through running, swimming and playing for a hockey club in Tonbridge. I also enjoy travelling when not prevented from doing so by pandemics.

Teaching Experience:

I started teaching in 1988 and have worked in a variety of schools, single sex and coed, in a variety of positions. I have taught several age groups ranging from Year 3 to Year 8 and subjects taught include Maths, English, Science, History and Geography. I have also had the good fortune to teach in Kenya and New Zealand - great experiences! Most recently, I was the Deputy Head and a class teacher in a local primary school and had much experience in helping children to pass the Bexley and Kent 11+ tests.

Tutoring Approach:

I seem to be renown for my awful jokes but it's certainly true that I like to teach through humour and making learning as fun as possible. I firmly believe that if children are relaxed and enjoying themselves then they will make greater progress so I like to employ games, puzzles and challenges to help them learn. However, there is also no getting away from the fact that practice makes better and there are certain things which children simply have to practise again and again. Therefore, I always seek the right balance to maximize progress. First and foremost though, I consider it important to initially assess a child's strengths and weaknesses and 'what makes them tick' and then work from there.

Qualifications:

• PGCE (Secondary) Pass from Aberystwyth University
• BA(Hons) 2:1 in History and International Politics from Aberystwyth University
