Jonathan - Stourport-on-Severn tutor
Information About Jonathan:
Personal Description:
Throughout my time at school, I excelled at humanities and essay writing subjects due to my concise and accurate writing style, as well as my ability to analyse information and translate this into well constructed paragraphs. For several years my primary career ambition has been to teach A-level and GCSE students, and I believe that personal tutoring is the perfect place for me to start.
After receiving GCSE results in 2018, I received an award from my school for high amount of value added on to the grades which my teachers had predicted me. For me, I knew exactly what I was capable of, and with a lot of hard work and determination I moved from an average student at a prestigious school to an anomaly who had exceeded expectations. Whilst it may be easy for people to attribute this to luck, the truth is that I worked hard every night and after trying numerous techniques, I created a revision style and timetable which suited me. My point is that I know how demoralising predicted grades or teachers' assessments can be for a student, especially in the build up to exams. But, having gone through the process myself, I believe I can help your child to overachieve expectations and fulfil their academic potential.
Teaching Experience:
Although I am new to tutoring, I helped with departmental work in sixth form and represented the History Department as ambassador. I will make an excellent tutor due to my engaging style of presentation and discussion work, as well as being a fairly recent product of sixth form. Having achieved A grades at A Level in Geography and History, I have a very good understanding of how to move up the grade boundaries and achieve the top grades under the current exam boards.
Tutoring Approach:
1) Exam technique. Learning the content will only get a student so far: I will help your child develop a clear and confident approach to exam papers.
2) Revision techniques. From mind maps and flash cards to note taking and practice papers - I've tried it all. I can help your child find a revision style that suits them so that they learn in an efficient and manageable way.
3) Grammar and writing style. For me, this is vital in achieving the top grades. Many students drop down the grade boundaries due to needless errors such as poor spelling and grammar, and other students struggle in conveying their points and ideas to the examiner. I will help your child write fluently, articulate their ideas well, and iron out simple mistakes.
4) Enthusiasm. I have a firm belief that what sets the best teachers apart is their passion for the subject, and their ability to retain the attention of students. I hope that in teaching your child, not only will they thrive academically, but they will also develop their own passion for the subject.
5) Last but by no means least, content. Not only will I go through the content (to a deadline if required), but I will also make sure your child has a thorough and comprehensive understanding of it so that no matter what question they are faced with, they are properly prepared.
