Information About Zoe:

Personal Description:

Would you like to be taught by a current teacher, experienced examiner and recent Head of Sixth Form? I have 21 years experience of teaching in a variety of excellent schools developing confidence and inspiring a lifelong love of learning. I am passionate about helping students to learn and get excellent results. I have helped many students get the grades they need, giving them individual support and targeted analysis and feedback on homework set. I mark all work completed by my tutees to a high standard, giving them the tools they need to succeed. I have years worth of experience as a Head of History and currently lead Sociology.

I have a proven track record in helping my students to achieve exam success. I am particularly proud of the fact that many of my students continue their studies of History, Politics and Sociology at degree level. Last year 100% of the students I worked with went on to Russell Group Universities to study subjects including History at Leeds and Politics at UCL.

I firmly believe that success is easier if students are made to feel able to connect and enjoy their studies. Therefore, all my lessons are well resourced and engaging, expertly equipping students to commit to further study at A Level or University should they want to. In my role as Head of History, my teaching inspired record numbers of students to choose the subject over Geography.

As a mother of three, I also understand that many students face challenges that can so easily be overcome with the right support. As a Parent I understand only too well the tension within the family that can be created when a child finds a subject difficult and very often schools simply do not have the time to teach the all important exam skills needed to achieve this success. Having coached my own children through GCSE and A Levels I am a firm believer that success can be enjoyed by all and love to see my students flourish and thrive as they gain in confidence through my support. This was acknowledged by stacey, one of GCSE students: "Thank you for all the help, I really appreciate it. Thank you for being a fantastic History Teacher".

Teaching Experience:

Since graduating from the University of Reading in 1997 with joint BA Hons in History and Politics, I have had a successful and fulfilling teaching career, holding a variety of roles in some very good schools. The highlights of my career are detailed below:

* Head of History in two schools
*Examiner of History and Politics
*Head of Sixth Form until last year, member of senior leadership team
*History Subject leader for trainee teachers in Yorkshire and Humberside area
*History subject consultant working with schools to improve GCSE grades
*Member of the Tutors' association -

My role as Head of Sixth Form has given me a wealth of experience in preparing students for University Applications. I help students compose Personal Statements, Oxbridge entry preparation, interviews and study skills mentoring.

Tutoring Approach:

I work with students to find their barriers to learning so that a plan for progress can be put in place quickly and effectively. Being very familiar with the demands of the examination for Edexcel and AQA specifications, I focus not only on content but the skills needed to 'unpack' the questions on the exam papers. Using a bank of past questions, examiners reports and model answers, I make learning enjoyable and give students a proven formula to expertly deal with the demands of each question type. For example in History, we work on the development of the vital skills involved in working with extracts, a large part of the GCSE and A Level examination. Using my experience as an examiner, we work together to identify context, provenance and tone, crucial skills needed to unlock the very top mark band. Through my examining and teaching experience I share an extensive bank of model answers so that students can instantly visualise what an A* looks like. We also look at use of language within answers which is extremely effective in instantly alerting examiners that a student has successfully addressed the Assessment Objectives, unlocking the very top mark bands.

My current teaching role enables me to stay at the cutting edge of all changes to specifications and important adjustments made by the examination boards, something which full time Tutors don't have access to.
I am nurturing and supportive as demonstrated by one of my most recent students who went on to study at a Russell Group University "You saved my A Levels, thank you so much".
