Michelle - Barnsley tutor
Information About Michelle:
Personal Description:
Hi! I am Michelle. I am a teacher of English Literature and study skills. I have 20 years of teaching experience, teaching secondary school students in key stages 3 & 4 (aged 11-16).
Most recently I have taught secondary school students at Ecclesfield School and Stocksbridge School in Sheffield. Prior to this I taught secondary school students at Kirk Balk Academy and Netherwood Academy, also in the South Yorkshire area.
I have a PGCE in English, BA and FDA degrees in Education and Learning Support, alongside an HLTA in English as my teaching specialism.
Teaching Experience:
I have 20 years' teaching experience within secondary education, teaching approximately 30 students per class, as well as small study groups and revision classes.
I have taught the following works of English literature:
• 19th, 20th and 21st Century literature (British and American).
• Shakespeare: Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and Much Ado About Nothing.
• Modern texts: Lord of the Flies (William Golding), Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol, and Great Expectations (Charles Dickens), Frankenstein (Mary Shelley) and Of Mice and Men (John Steinbeck).
I have also taught students how to compare poems, poetic theme, structure, and close analysis. My teaching has focused on the following works of poetry, suitable for 'Unseen' analysis at GCSE level:
• Power and Conflict Poetry (poetry from 1789 to the present day): Ozymandias, London, Prelude, My Last Duchess, Charge of the Light Brigade, Exposure, Storm on the Island, Bayonet Charge, Remains, Poppies, War photographer, Tissue, The Émigrée, Checking Out Me History, and Kamikaze.
Study Skills (English language content): explorations in creative reading and writing and identifying and addressing writers' viewpoints and perspectives. This includes developing skills in reading, writing and spoken language.
Tutoring Approach:
As a teacher, I want you to succeed, but I also want you to be able to enjoy English literature as much as I do. My approach to teaching English literature is creating a learning space in which students feel they can ask questions at any point. I will give examples along the way and invite you to share your own ideas throughout our classes. This way, I know much progress you are making.
Classes often include analysis of themes, plots and characterisation based on a range of texts. They will also include evaluating the given writer's choice of vocabulary, as well as the text's grammatical and structural features: analysing and evaluating how language, structure, form and presentation contribute to text's quality and impact upon the reader. Finally, students will learn and apply linguistic and literary terminology in order to develop their literary skills.
