Holly - Preston tutor
Information About Holly:
Personal Description:
Hello there! I`m Holly, Astrophysics graduate with a 1st class Masters Degree from The University of Glasgow. I`ve tutoring on a part time basis for around 8 years and am now a full time tutor. Most of my previous tutoring has been in person, however I am now online as well.
The subjects I tutor are Physics, Maths, Astronomy, Chemistry and Biology.
Physics, Maths and Astronomy I tutor all levels from ks1 to A level and occasionally the 1st year of university.
I tutor Chemistry and Biology up to GCSE level.
I genuinely care about each and every one of my students succeeding, to this end I am more than happy to provide a summary of what we spoke about during our session as well as some questions to try if required. I also find it helpful for parents/guardians to have a general idea of the subjects covered as well as how their child is progressing so I provide a short report of each session designed to keep parents in the loop.
In my current life (outside of the pandemic) I do a fair amount of motivational speaking at travel and/or motorbike shows to make people believe in themselves and get them started on the path to doing things they didn't believe they could. My inspiration to start doing this came from several life experiences of mine, most recently riding a tiny 125cc motorbike from London to Mongolia following parts of the old silk road.
Teaching Experience:
I currently have over 400 hours of tutoring experience, most of this has been in person but over the last 6 months my students have moved onto online learning during the pandemic. My experience covers teaching people of all ages from KS1 through to early years of university (for Physics and Astronomy) as well as Adults returning to learning later in life..
In addition to regular one to one tutoring I also have run tutorial groups of up to 20 university students, explaining concepts and marking exams.
Tutoring Approach:
When tutoring I work best with individual students, but I am happy to tutor (for example) 2 siblings if they are working on the same subject. There is no fixed structure to the way I run my sessions as I have found everyone learns differently. I myself understand this very well as I have been diagnosed with dyslexia. One thing I have noticed, is that no matter how good the intentions of the student are, there will come a time where they simply cannot carry on concentrating though fatigue. Recognising this moment and allowing them to take a quick break or changing your teaching style is incredibly important. Trying to push through simply results in frustration for both the student and the tutor.
