Sarah - Holywood tutor
Information About Sarah:
Personal Description:
I love working and teaching children and helping them to become more confident learners. My goal is to give them the tools and skills to be able to breakdown any challenges they come across in all areas of the curriculum. I also provide a safe learning environment whereby they understand that making mistakes is all part of learning. When planning lessons, I will spend a fair bit of time researching the alternative ways to teach the concept and choose the best that would suit the student I am tutoring. I enjoy creating stimulating lessons that enthuse my pupil.
Teaching Experience:
I have been teaching since 2016 when I gained my PGCE in Primary Education. I worked in one school for the majority of the first four years of teaching in upper KS2. I then decided to become a supply teacher which gave me a wealth of experience of working across different age groups, schools and demographics. Since the beginning of 2020, I have been tutoring children of primary school ages from 5 to 11 across reading, maths and preparing for the 11+ exams in Northern Ireland.
Tutoring Approach:
Before COVID, I did offer tutoring at home but since the lockdowns began, I have been tutoring online which has been ideal as I can use the same software I used in schools allowing me to create interactive lessons. When using Zoom, this enables me to share the screen, allowing pupils to also write and answer questions on the 'board'.
When I initially meet a new pupil, it is important to do an initial assessment to establish the areas that may need the most focus. Once these are identified, I will then organise lessons around these areas and usually this will involve presenting the new learning topic which could be via a video, a song, text, or even a concept. This will then be followed by an activity that allows them to put it into action. After this guided practice, I will assess the pupil's understanding. If they have understood what has been presented then we will move on to then possibly adding more difficult elements of the concept or practicing harder skills. If they're not getting it, I will go back to the information to present it in a different way until they have grasped the idea.
Tutees and parents can also provide me with areas that they feel need more focus and I will plan lessons based on these. I am very flexible and am always happy to take a steer from parents and tutees.
