Information About Victoria:

Personal Description:

My name is Victoria. I hold a PhD in English Literature from Cardiff University, where I taught medieval and early modern literature until July 2020. I am now beginning one-on-one tutoring to support secondary school and college students with their exams and university applications.

I offer tuition at GCSE and A Level for all major exam boards (AQA, CCEA, Edexcel, Eduqas, OCR, and WJEC). Alongside tutoring, I can also support Year 13 students with their UCAS personal statements, or provide information, advice, and guidance about university applications.

Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, I am only tutoring online. I typically use Skype, but I can use Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Hangout on request.

Teaching Experience:

I have six years' experience teaching lectures and seminars to undergraduates at Cardiff University. I completed a teaching qualification focused on small group teaching with Distinction in 2016, and I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, which is the leading professional body for university teaching in the UK.

I have particular subject expertise in Chaucer and Shakespeare, but I have also taught several major GCSE and A-Level authors, including Emily Brontė, Aphra Behn, Angela Carter, Wilkie Collins, Thomas Hardy, Ted Hughes, Christopher Marlowe, Sylvia Plath, Christina Rosetti, George Bernard Shaw, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, and Mark Twain (among others). I am a registered examiner for H472/01 English Literature Drama and Poetry Pre-1900 (OCR).

I enjoy working with young people to help them reach their full potential. Since 2018, I have worked with Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils across Wales and the South West of England, delivering tutorials based on my academic research for The Brilliant Club, a charity that is committed to widening participation in higher education. I have also delivered masterclasses to Key Stage 5 pupils for The Seren Network.

Tutoring Approach:

I approach tutoring as a collaborative process based on respect, trust, and mutual understanding between teacher and student. I am a patient and empathetic teacher, and I work with my students to help them identify the areas or skills they would like to improve. I tailor my sessions to the needs of my students to help them grow in confidence and achieve the results they deserve.

I can deliver sessions on set texts or focus core skills such as exam techniques, essay writing, and spelling, punctuation, and grammar. I use a range of learning activities to help my students become critical thinkers and independent learners, including comprehension exercises, close reading activities, and exam-style questions.

I keep records my students' grades and regularly report on their progress. I also aim to give my students constructive feedback to help them improve their work. I relate my feedback closely to the marking criteria and assessment objectives to prepare my students for their exams.
