Mark - Wallasey tutor
Information About Mark:
Personal Description:
I enjoy creative writing and have published twelve short stories in print anthologies issued by a range of publishers in the UK, the US and Europe. I have had a further three stories published in online magazines. I am currently completing a novel which I will submit to agents and publishers later in the year.
I am passionate about Literature, particularly the work of the English Romantics. I am currently researching the wide-ranging philosophical influences upon Coleridge and their subsequent impact upon both his poetry and that of Wordsworth.
I am a keen walker - particularly in the footsteps of Wordsworth and Coleridge in the Lakes. We have family membership of the National Trust, English Heritage and the RSPB and frequently visit sites owned by these charities. I especially value taking my son to visit historical places and I delight in his burgeoning love of history
Teaching Experience:
I have taught English Language, Literature and Media Studie in state and private schools for over twenty-one years. I have experience of leading key stages and of the Head of English role. I also have experience of examination marking. I have a particular strength in working with Gifted and Talented students - including Oxbridge applicants - however, I have always worked with students of all abilities and I possess expertise in working with disaffected boys.
My passion for literary texts, critical inquiry and unleashing the power of the imagination is evident in my lessons.
Tutoring Approach:
I am a highly experienced, committed and imaginative teacher of English. I am passionate that all students engage with literary texts and I subsequently deliver lessons that are enthusiastic, intellectually-rigorous and which foster a spirit of intellectual enquiry. I am currently researching how to develop students' ability to frame their own questions in order to enhance their ability to think independently and critically about texts.
I have always embraced the opportunity to work with students identified as 'Gifted and Talented' in English. I am currently leading an overhaul of reading at Key Stage Three, using the Penguin Classics for Schools range so that students in our top three sets can access demanding texts from across the literary canon.
I have a highly successful record of examination results at both GCSE and A level with students of all abilities but in particular 'Gifted and Talented' students. Each year I have acted as a mentor to students at GCSE, supporting their preparation for the examination series. I enjoy close, supportive relationships with students both academically and pastorally.
My background in Classical Civilization enables me to explore the Classical influences and references in texts and I embrace the opportunity to teach students about the ancient world and its influence upon later literary traditions and wider society.
