Information About Jesurasa:

Personal Description:

My name is Xavier. I live in Harrow in London. I am a teacher of mathematics with nearly 20 years of classroom teaching experience. Over the years I have also tutored many students. I hold the following qualifications: BSc. (Maths), MSc. (Maths), Diploma in Statistics, BSc. (Engineering) and Charter in Engineering.
In the past chapter of my life, I was an engineer. I have managed various engineering projects. For over 7 years I worked for the United Nations as an engineer for a development project.

Teaching Experience:

Now, I am a mathematics teacher with experience of 20 years of classroom teaching and nearly 20 years of one-one private tutoring. I have just completed 10 years at a college in South West London teaching mainly GCSE and A Level maths including Further Maths. I have experience of teaching the following A level maths modules C1, C2, C3, C4, S1, S2, FP1, FP2, FP3, M1, M2, M3 and GCSE maths. I also have experience of marking A level exam papers for Edexcel.

Tutoring Approach:

Generally, in tutoring my primary approach is to hear and understand student's needs in the subject and respond accordingly. (one way is to give the student a diagnostic test). I always provide the student with the overview of the subject and what to look out for. I point out common mistakes and misconceptions. I demonstrate good presentation of answers. I work through past papers with the student. Homework is a part and parcel of my tutoring. I consider tutoring as a two way dialogue between the tutor and the student in which the student is able to freely discuss their difficulties and confusions and receive guidance in how to improve their standard. I do not follow a rigid prescriptive approach but use my knowledge and experience to respond appropriately.

In the last four years I have tutored over 30 students online and have done well over 1000 hours of online lessons. They were mostly GCSE, A Level and A L Further Maths students.

I found online tutoring very convenient as it saved a lot of travel time and little preparation to dress up for the journey. The setting up time for each lesson was under two minutes and the connection was instant and the sound was very clear. Students who initially showed reluctance to switch to online lessons because of their past negative experiences, later found it to be ideal. I still remember the case of one student who I was tutoring in-person for a while. After a few lessons I proposed online lessons to her but she dismissed the idea. As the exam was approaching she found it hard time-manage the regular lessons and she wanted to try out online lessons. After one or two trial sessions she liked the idea and she continued to take online lessons. It was 11pm on the day before the maths exam she had some confusion on a certain topic. I set up a session almost instantly and helped her and put her at ease. She got through the exam well.

The platform I used allowed both the student and the teacher access to the same virtual whiteboard. Therefore, it was not all "teacher talk and student listen" lessons. My typical lesson on a new topic would be introduction of the topic which would involve finding out how much the student knows already on the topic and then pitching the explanation accordingly. I would take a few questions and demonstrate how to answer them. Then give the student questions from the text book or from some online sources. A good part of the lesson would be spent on student working through the questions on the whiteboard and me watching, prompting, directing, questioning or correcting the student's work. The lessons are always highly focussed and intense as there is no distraction. Therefore, the lessons are productive as a substantial amount of work is done in a lesson.
