Information About Oliver:

Personal Description:

My name is Oliver/Ollie, I am 27 years old and originally from Wiltshire in England. I have recently begun a postgraduate research role at Cardiff University after securing a first-class honours in my BSc in Chemistry from USW. After my three years, I hope to be awarded a PhD so that I may go on to further post-doctoral opportunities and eventually lecturing. I thoroughly enjoy the idea of engaging others in a field I'm so passionate about and watching their knowledge grow.

Outside of my academic career, I am part of a local allstar cheerleading team. There are a few members of the team who are of secondary school age and I always enjoy discussing what they have learnt and what they plan to do following their studies. It is great to see their passion for science and I feel rewarded by encouraging them to nurture that determination.

(Please note, I have currently sent off the details for my CRB check which hopefully should be returned very soon as it is in process. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.)

Teaching Experience:

During my A-levels, I assisted one of my teachers with her foundation-tier French class. At the start of the year, they were unruly and relentless in disrupting the lesson. After much persistence from my teacher and myself, the students began to engage with the subject, some even progressing to higher-tier. It was a very rewarding academic year that allowed me to see the impact that a good teacher can have on their students.

Within my cohort at university, we all used our strengths to assist each other in the group. My speciality being physical chemistry, I was able to transfer this knowledge within my peers and helped them to achieve good grades in their final exams despite struggling with the subject throughout the three years of their studies.

Tutoring Approach:

I will work with the student to identify opportunities for them to maximise their potential. Whether it's classwork they struggle to grasp immediately or homework assignments they may need assistance with, I like to provide a fresh look on the topic. This is done using analogies and worked examples so the student can draw their own conclusions and solutions.

It is important to build confidence in the student's own abilities so they can engage fully in contact time with their lessons in school. I will also work with them to form strategies for exam techniques (if applicable) making sure their application of knowledge allows them to fully capitalise on the mark scheme.

I strive to stay up-to-date with the current curriculum within Wales to ensure my work with the student is relevant and beneficial to their education.
