James - Leamington Spa tutor
Information About James:
Personal Description:
I am a 26-year-old final-year medical student at Hull York Medical School, with a first class biomedical sciences degree from Durham University. I am currently offering tuition for biology and chemistry up to GCSE and A-Level standard. In my lessons, I aim to use a patient and enthusiastic teaching approach in order to boost understanding, enjoyment, and importantly, exam success. Having experienced both of these sciences throughout my academic career, I understand that grasping certain concepts can be challenging, so I am more than happy to help!
Teaching Experience:
Since March 2018, I have accumulated several hundred hours of tutoring experience. This has all been thoroughly enjoyable, and has included working with students such as:
- Ella, who is currently working towards her biology and chemistry GCSEs next summer (2020). During each session, we go through the AQA specifications for both subjects, and Ella points out any areas she wishes to improve upon. For example, sometimes she may wish to work on homeostasis, and another time we may look at organic chemistry. We will then discuss those particular topics, and work through any associated past paper questions, so that Ella can become more accustomed to predicting what exact marking points will be in the mark scheme.
- Daniel, who has just completed his biology A-Level exams. The main focus during these sessions was on Paper 3 of the AQA Biology A-Level exam, particularly the essay questions. When faced with a relatively broad exam question such as 'Discuss the importance of diffusion in living organisms', Daniel was able to appreciate the importance of taking a step back and trying to look at which aspects of the specification could be worked into his answer, rather than focusing too much on one particular area. We were then able to improve his ability to go beyond the specification, and think about which pieces of Daniel's further reading could be incorporated into his answers.
This information from GCSE and A-Level is very fresh in my mind, and I have been able to expand on this knowledge whilst at university, thus I feel confident and assured that I can improve understanding and ability.
Tutoring Approach:
I like to plan each lesson around specific topics in the specification, for example, one GCSE biology lesson may focus on photosynthesis and respiration, and one A-Level chemistry lesson may be more geared towards thermodynamics. This ensures that I can track the progress of each student.
The lesson will begin with discussing the strengths and weaknesses experienced with the specific topic, and then we will aim to improve understanding throughout.
In my experience, I believe that exam practice is the best way to succeed with GCSEs and A-levels. Therefore, my teaching approach will incorporate the use of past exam papers, so that students can almost predict what marking points will be in the mark scheme when they come across particular questions.
I am very happy to alter my teaching approach to fit the needs of every student, as I understand that everyone learns differently!
