Emily - Brighton tutor
Information About Emily:
Personal Description:
I am a recent graduate from Sussex University of International Development (which is a mix of International Relations, Anthropology, Sociology, Economics, etc...) and Spanish!
I am half french and grew up (in England) speaking the language at home, but spending a couple of weeks every term of primary school in a french school where I got a more solid grammatical base. I took the GCSE (A*) and A level (A) so I understand how the exams and the teaching system works in the UK.
I have been learning spanish for eleven years in school and university, and have travelled extensively in Spain and Latin America, working in different development and permaculture projects and speaking to a lot of different people. As part of my degree I studied in Mexico for a year where I hardly spoke a word of english.
I have been learning languages my whole life, I really value being able to speak them and am passionate about encouraging others to do so too.
Teaching Experience:
I have tutored beginners spanish and given french conversation classes, as well as helping out friends travelling to french/spanish-speaking countries. I have also worked with young people extensively out of an academic setting; as a leader on the National Citizen Service, delivering PSHE workshops through a student project.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe it's really important to recognise that everyone thinks and learns differently. This means being resourceful and pragmatic when approaching learning and thinking laterally to find ways of understanding that best suit the individual. Especially with languages, where grammar and vocabulary often have to be memorised, I think it's really important to use of visual aids and use real life scenarios to put into practice what has been learnt. Whether it's help with written work, conversation, understanding concepts or grammar rules, I am a very flexible person with a lot of patience and perseverance.
