Sandra - Port Talbot tutor

Information About Sandra:

Personal Description:

I am a qualified teacher and current Head of Social Sciences at a Welsh medium comprehensive. Previously I was a Social Science lecturer at a 6th form college and prior to that, Head of Social Sciences, Head of Business and Head of years 10/11 in a Welsh medium comprehensive for 18 years and can therefore deliver all said subjects in Welsh and English at all levels. I have a real passion for teaching that is very much brought to classroom teaching and tutoring sessions on a daily basis. In turn this has ensured successful and excellent reports in four inspections.

I am an approachable yet focused and committed individual who truly enjoys sharing in the successes and development of others. I am a fun-loving, patient and caring person, and always seek to understand the learning needs of each individual in order to maximise both enjoyment and achievement.

Personal interests include participation in Duke of Edinburgh, hiking, horse riding, music, crosswords and cookery.

Teaching Experience:

I have over 26 years experience in teaching Sociology, Psychology and Business Studies at both AS/A2 Level and GCSE through the medium of Welsh and English. My students have consistently achieve high results, some above their predicted grades. I chair the A-level Sociology examination board for the WJEC (both Wales and Eduqas) and I have been an examiner for Sociology and Business Studies at all levels for 18 years. I was invited to create a Welsh-medium resource for the BBC, which has now been completed and distributed to all Welsh-medium secondary schools throughout Wales. I am a member of the 'Agored' organisation that is responsible for creating Sociology bilingual resources, as well as on-line revision resources for 'Blended Learning' (WJEC) in both Welsh and English. I have tutored for nearly 10 years at all levels and throughout Wales, whether on-line or home visits. I would therefore be delighted to share my experiences with students so that they may achieve in their examinations.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is through ensuring a personalisation of the learning experience through the use of a variety of methods. Each student's needs and expectations from tutoring will naturally be different, and my job is to help identify, and cater to those individual needs.
I tailor my tutoring to the individual needs and circumstances eg. working on homework, developing on answer structures whilst building on the feedback from their school teacher along with setting achievable targets.
Regarding my tutoring rates: I can work from home presenting on-line lessons, however if that is not suitable then I can come to you. In such cases, travel expenses will be included.

I am an 'up-beat' individual who loves teaching and I endeavour to create an enjoyable, safe, supportive yet challenging learning environment, particularly focusing on the development of the learning skills that are required to be successful, especially in an examination environment. This is attained by building on my extensive experiences as both chair and examiner along with the use of revision methods, past paper questions/answers, various exercises as well as distributing vital and relevant information.
