Ryan - Darlington tutor
Information About Ryan:
Personal Description:
I am a passionate and dynamic science teacher of 37, with two young children, offering expert tuition in the Northeast.
Originally from Darlington, I am an enthusiastic lover of science and nature, and also music and teaching.
My life and work experience has been wide and varied and I believe this helps me a great deal in understanding how to get the most out of people.
Teaching Experience:
I am currently in my first full-time teaching job in the UK as a teacher of science at an outstanding school in the Northeast. I teach several GCSE science groups, two A-level physics groups and all parts of keystage 3.
Prior to obtaining my PGCE, I held posts as an English teacher in Laos and as a Physics lecturer at the University of Central Queensland in Australia.
During a period of 5 years I was self-employed as a freelance consultant and a large part of this role involved teaching in small groups and one-to-one tutoring on the manufacturing processes and engineering principles of the glazing industry. This experience really opened my eyes to the range of techniques and approaches required by different people.
On top of all of these professional teaching roles, I have successfully tutored my cousin through her Maths GCSE and many of my friends throughout my own education.
Tutoring Approach:
Part of my approach to teaching science is quite holistic as I believe the more links that can be made in the minds of the students between different aspects of science, mathematics and engineering the more their knowledge and deep understanding improves. This leads me to examine students' comprehension and potential misconceptions relating to each aspect of science before delivering rich and inspiring input to help the student see what the principles are, what they are linked to, where they come from and what real-life applications they have that are familiar. With this approach students develop more of an awareness about the science around them and how the universe works on different scales.
The second part of my approach is much more practical and involves a focus on the exam specification each student is following. This involves more detailed questioning and plenty of practice with exam style questions, mark schemes and exam technique and tips. My approach to teaching maths relies more heavily on this type of work.
I have learned to evaluate individuals' teaching requirements quickly and each student will receive a tailored set of lessons to suit their own needs. This will include a combination of the methods above and as many demonstrations as can be included, given the subject and the time-frame required. I aim to inspire through engaging sessions that will keep the students thinking and I believe confidence building is a key part of tutoring - especially when exams are approaching.
