Information About Nick:

Personal Description:

I am a 64-year-old mathematics graduate, living near Frodsham & recently retired from the chemical industry. I am married with two grown-up children who have now left home. I have found the tuition of maths a fresh & interesting challenge from what I did in my full-time job & I believe that, because of this, my enthusiasm for the subject is transmitted to my students.

While I don't offer a discount on the first session, I don't ask for the student's fee, which I'm supposed to collect on behalf of the agency. This fee comes to something over half of my hourly rate so in effect, the student gets a discount greater than 50% on the first tutorial.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring, one-to-one, for 20 years & have also spent time working with small groups of students in a local comprehensive school in the run-up to national exams. I have worked with students of ages ranging from 10 years to 18 years as well as adults on the mathematics units of their university degrees.

At A-level, I tutor:
Pure / Core Year1 & Year2
Mechanics Year1 & Year2
Decision Year1

While I'm fine with Probability & Statistics at GCSE, & I can find my way through Probability at A-level, I'm no statistician & if you require support with your A-level mainly for Statistics, you should probably look for another tutor.

I no longer offer tuition of further maths as I had so few students that I found myself having to relearn the topics every few years.

Tutoring Approach:

I'm happy to receive maths problems between tutorial sessions, via email or WhatsApp, and reply with worked solutions.

During the time I have been tutoring, I have received many cards & e-mails commenting, almost invariably, on my patience. I appreciate that doing extra maths may be daunting for some students, especially if they are not confident with the subject. With this in mind, I try to encourage a relaxed informality from the outset, with occasional reminders, if necessary, of why we're doing this! I realize that each student is an individual & try to deliver what they (& their parents) want from the sessions. I welcome parents' involvement & will address any particular concerns that they have.
