Annie - Glastonbury tutor
Information About Annie:
Personal Description:
I am a native French speaker. I am friendly, approachable, patient and non-judgemental. I have been a full-time French tutor for over 8 years and I am very motivated, I am organised and passionate about French and English literature. I speak and write a good standard of English and French. I successfully completed the course PTLLS in 2013 (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) (Level 4) at Strode College, Somerset. This is really useful in my role as a tutor. I have been a French tutor for over 8 years now in Somerset. All my classes are online at the present moment due to the present circumstances. I am willing to discuss possibility of discounts for GCSE and A level students preferably if sessions are booked in a block of 10.
I studied Philosophy and French literature up to the Baccalauréat in Brittany. I graduated in Brest University where I passed a degree (Deug) in English and American literature, English Grammar, linguistics, Phonetics, translation from English into French and vice-versa. The degree also included American and English History. I have the level of Licence in the same fields as above. I have an up-to-date DBS certificate. The first session is half price so you can see how I work and the type of support I offer and the materials I use for my sessions.
Teaching Experience:
I have been a full time private tutor for over 8 years now and enjoy this very much. I have a lot of experience with the GCSE and A level curriculum especially with AQA and Edexcel. I do like to focus on Grammar and explain it to students. I also provide recordings to help with listening, pronunciation. These recordings are often from exercises that we have previously studied so they help students even further. I can help adults brush on their French or learn the language from a beginner's level up to an advanced level. If you only need a holiday level, this is fine: I can help you with this too. If you intend to work and live in France, I will offer more targeted sessions with lots of grammar exercises, speaking, listening and writing practice. I also offer conversational French sessions for either one or two adults. In addition to working with the help of text books, I also offer my own recordings with sentences of my own creation or from exercise books which are revisions of what we have seen in previous sessions to help students learn more efficiently.
For GCSE and A Level students:
I offer real guidance to improve their grades for GCSE French and I also for A levels. My work involves explaining in detail the main points of grammar and guiding their pronunciation so students can perform better for speaking and listening exams. So far I have helped students with their IGCSE, GCSE and A levels. I am really motivated and truly enjoy seeing my students improve their confidence in spoken and written French.
My testimonials:
Sarah et Richard, Shepton Mallet, on 19.09.2017 :
We have been working with Annie for three years now and really enjoy our sessions with her. We are a couple who studied French at GCSE and A level many years ago and who now spend a lot of time in France on holiday. We wanted to brush up on our French in order to converse with the locals and get more out of our visits to France. Annie is great and allows you to find your own pace whilst paying attention to grammar and helping increase your knowledge of the language. She speaks French very clearly, making it easier to understand. We have used a number of text books as reference points in our sessions to increase our vocabulary and to understand verbs, tenses and conjugations. We are now more confident when speaking French and continue to improve. Thank you Annie.
Chris and Maggie 28.09. 2017:
We can thoroughly recommend Annie. We started lessons with Annie to improve our school-level French and to be better at conversation when in France. She prepares very well and for us the combination of conversation and the use of a text book has been the right approach. It has helped us to refresh our basic grammar which we have found very useful. Finally the lessons, which she tailors to your interests and requirements, are very enjoyable.
William, student at Millfield school in Somerset wrote to me on 24/08/17:
Hi Annie,
I would just like to thank you for helping me with my French as I felt much more confident before taking the exam and I hope that my result reflects all of the hard work. You have been so kind and patient with me and I wish you all the best in the future.
Thank you again. Will.
Anne, from Wales: I would highly recommend Annie as a tutor to anyone learning French. She really knows her stuff - not just as a native French speaker but as a teacher who is tuned in to where a learner has problems and knowledge gaps. She is very helpful in supplying the information that you don't get in the textbooks and in providing insights into both written and spoken French. Add to that friendliness and a sense of humour and you have everything you could ask for in an expert language tutor.
Kate from Blagdon :
"Annie has a natural talent for teaching her native tongue. However, she backs this up with a useful knowledge of grammatical terms and rules, whilst also ensuring that the student is 'au fait' with colloquial French, both spoken and written. She has a knack of emphasizing the positive and endless patience when it comes to ensuring that the student has fully understood the point, as well as forgiving when s/he has (I have) forgotten it once again! Annie is both reasonable and flexible with a warm personality and a nice sense of humour. I have not a moment's hesitation in recommending that she become your French teacher if you are based in or near Glastonbury."
Rosie from Wells, Somerset: 'Annie is a very good French teacher, she is kind, smart, patient. My French has improved just after a few lessons and I really look forward to our next session together'.
Tutoring Approach:
I like to discuss with my students to know exactly what the students want to get from the lessons. I keep in mind that each student has different goals and motives to learn the language. I draw a learning plan to guide the students and myself. My tutoring sessions are tailor-made as students are different with different learning styles. I think it is important that students make progress and for this I think it is also important that the atmosphere be pleasant so I do like it when my students are enjoying their learning and progressing.
I like to focus on the pronunciation so students can be understood properly by French native speakers. It does make things easier for students when they travel to France or if they want to work there, for instance. I focus on the pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and spelling. I truly enjoy seeing my students improve their confidence in spoken and written French, I also provide tips regarding modern spoken French. While tutoring to beginners, I find that it is important to offer to students a good grasp of grammar as this enables students to start constructing little useful sentences on their own. I correct students on their pronunciation to give them a good start. I am aware that everyone is different and consequently I tend to teach according to the needs of each student. I have a DBS certificate.
