Personal Description:

I'm semi-retired. I was head of Business Studies at Stevenson College (now Edinburgh College) until 2008. I spent 5 years as an advisor with the Citizens Advice Bureau. In my spare time I enjoy playing tennis and golf (badly) plus walking with friends. I also enjoy cooking, reading and travelling.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching accounting for over 35 years on a variety of courses at different levels - ranging from introductory book-keeping to financial and management accounting on HNC/D and professional courses such as AAT, IAB etc. After my retirement II worked for 5 years on a part-time basis at a private tutorial college in Edinburgh teaching Higher and A level accounting. Recent students I have helped have been studying National 5s, Higher Accounting, A Level Accounting and AAT. Have also tutored University students from Edinburgh, Napier, Aberdeen and the Open University on a variety of accounting courses and levels.

I have also been involved in advising people on the bookkeeping, accounting and business aspects of running or owning a small business.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to teaching depends on the tutee/student. At the end of the day I am there to help you to understand the subject you are studying and then to pass an assessment or exam. I focus on explaining the topic/ subject as clearly and simply as possible. I can also focus on exam technique and how to perform as well as you can in the exam.

In an ideal world one-to-one tuition is better than online learning. However in the current changing situation tutoring from my home or the tutee's home is becoming more difficult and uncertain so online tutoring is becoming more popular. Zoom, Skype and Messenger can all be used. It needs a little more planning but tutoring online can work very successfully.
