Personal Description:

I have a First Class Honours degree and a PhD in chemistry. This strong subject knowledge enables me to approach a topic from multiple directions to help a student to understand. I very much enjoy tutoring one-one or in small groups. Its such a pleasure when a student understands something for the first time!

My tutoring is supportive. We focus on understanding and confidence building throughout. As a student gains confidence, performance improves and they enjoy the subject more.

Teaching Experience:

For the last few years I have been Head of Chemistry in a selective state school. Previously I taught chemistry in a non-selective independent school. This teaching experience has been augmented by private tutoring where I have supported students of all abilities at KS5, KS4 and KS3. My students typically achieve excellent results exceeding their personal targets.

As well as teaching chemistry at KS3, GCSE, and A level, I have extensive experience of taking students beyond the A level curriculum, for example, BMAT preparation. I also have experience at teaching physics to GCSE and biology to KS3 and maths to KS4.

Tutoring Approach:

Many students are limited by their confidence and my approach is to take them in small steps from what they know to what they need to know to achieve their objectives. I seek to identify a person's preferred learning style and tune my teaching to achieve success. My first priority is always to ensure the student has a comprehensive understanding of a topic and I assess understanding continually. After a topic is mastered to the point where the knowledge can be applied, I use past examination papers and ensure that the student understands the expected form of answer to the full range of examination questions.
