David - Deeside tutor
Information About David:
Personal Description:
I am an experienced tutor in English, Mathematics and History. I have been a member of the senior management team at a highly regarded independent school but I can complement this with experience teaching in an inner city state school. I have run my own successful tuition centre and have prepared hundreds of children for entrance exams, SATs tests and encouraged many more to achieve their potential by building their confidence and enthusiasm for learning. As Director of Studies in the independent sector I have extensive knowledge and experience of the selection process at all ages up to 11+. I can prepare a child not only for the initial written tests but also for interviews and scholarship exams. Such preparation is also appropriate for pupils taking entrance tests for selective state schools.
Teaching Experience:
Form Teacher, Heathfield School, Kidderminster 1989
Form Teacher, Four Dwellings Junior School, Birmingham 1989-1991
Director of Studies, Form Tutor, Head of History, King's School Junior School, Worcester 1991-1998
Owner and principal of Brereton House Nursery and Tuition Centre, Worcester 1998-2009
Self-employed private tutor 2009-present.
I qualified as a teacher in 1987 after achieving a BA (Hons) degree (2.1) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education both from University College, Aberystwyth. In 2010 I took a year long Level 3 (equivalent to third year undergraduate standard) course in language and literacy with the Open University (final assessment score: 83%) in order to be able to offer English to pupils.
I have taught in both state and private schools. In 1998 I fulfilled a desire to become self-employed but still remain in education. With my wife I ran a preschool in Worcester and taught older pupils in the evenings and at weekends. I have taught four year olds to read and helped Master's degree students with their dissertations. My most interesting assignment was with a young actor who requested voice coaching for a part in a Stratford on Avon play.
I have prepared hundreds of children for independent school entrance tests with a great deal of success, including many scholarships. I am fully aware of the criteria used by schools to select pupils as I was part of the selection team at King's Worcester. Update: in 2014 I began to teach a child whose parents were informed was two years behind the attainment levels expected for her age; in January and February 2016 she sat entrance tests for four leading independent schools in Chester and North Wales and passed them all.
I have assisted parents who home school their children by liaising with local authorities and designing a suitable curriculum.
I have taught all ages from 3 years to adult in basic skills.
Tutoring Approach:
I love to learn and love to teach; my aim is to communicate my enthusiasm for a subject to a pupil no matter how dry it may seem! I teach with a smile and hope to increase a child's confidence by making him/her aware of their skills and qualities instead of highlighting their weaknesses.
