Information About Emma-Jane:

Personal Description:

At the moment I am offering Maths tutoring only.

Please note that I charge extra if I have to travel to the student`s home for lessons. This will be agreed beforehand.

Currently offering summer holiday tuition in maths - give your understanding of maths a boost! - mornings preferable. Quite a lot of spaces currently, as exams are nearly over. I will be able to offer times during weekday mornings and afternoons.

I have loved Maths and Science from a very early age and I genuinely enjoy helping others to understand and do maths. I am an experienced private tutor, willing to teach all ages and abilities up to and including A-level, in Maths.

I am very friendly, patient and understanding as a teacher. I never criticise or make the student feel bad; if they are struggling with something instead I try to think of other ways that they can approach it so that they have a strong understanding for the next time they tackle a problem.

I am a Cambridge graduate and have worked in different industries since then. I recently made the decision to make tutoring my primary source of income, as I enjoy helping others learn so much.

While at school I did very well in exams, and I have expertise in teaching exam technique. I am able to pass on, I hope, my own tips and tricks for excelling in exams.

Teaching Experience:

I have privately tutored all ages and levels in Maths, with great results. Including helping a boy who needed help with his maths who then went on to achieve a scholarship from Eton.

I have also done work experience at GCSE level in a private school for girls where I helped pupils with Maths, Chemistry and Physics when they needed help understanding the work in class, and also had a couple of opportunities to teach the whole class.

I am registered with and certified by Kensington & Chelsea Tutors, although I now usually only tutor students who live close enough to come to my house.

I have been a member of the Institute of Physics since my first year of Cambridge. I like solving unusual problems and giving students gems of information to inspire them, in physics and maths particularly.

My joy of helping others to learn began when I was around 7 years old when I taught my 3 year old brother the basics of mathematics. Later on I was known for helping friends at school with homework, and in lessons for being able to explain things to them.

Tutoring Approach:

My strengths are helping students with particular areas of difficulty to improve confidence, and helping tackle exam questions step-by-step.

I believe the most important thing is patience, and to listen to the student, help them with any key issues they are struggling with, give them new ways to approach problems that they might not have encountered from other sources. Then they can tackle the subject matter with greater confidence.

I also believe the best way to learn is to go through problems with the student, and note areas where they might be making mistakes. Then I can think of examples on the spot, to improve on the areas they are struggling with, before moving on.
