Information About Colin:

Personal Description:

I live in Tiverton near Exeter, in Devon. I worked for 25 years as assistant Musical Director and first keyboard on the West End production of Les Miserables. Since then I have been musical director for Don Giovanni the opera, which attracted some favourable reviews in the press ("……Colin Pettet's little ensemble played beautifully ." - Independent. "...the conductor, (Colin Pettet)……… achieves feats of coordination with the singers who may be anywhere on Heaven's dance floor." - The Spectator. I am presently a tutor on the Music Theatre course at Chichester University. Although my training is classical I have an active interest in popular styles particularly Jazz and Blues.

Teaching Experience:

Although my living has been primarily as a performer I have taught regularly throughout my career. I have taught piano privately and at Brunel University Arts Centre, and coached privately for GCSE, 'O' and 'A' Level Music. I have also worked covering the post of Head of Music in an independent preparatory school and also as a supply teacher regularly throughout the last few years. As Assistant Musical Director at Les Miserables, I was responsible for auditioning and coaching all of the children and many of the adults. I am currently working as a tutor on the Musical Theatre Course at Chichester University.

Tutoring Approach:

I feel it is very important to allow a pupil to progress at their own pace. At the end of every lesson, they should feel they have mastered something, however small, which they couldn't do previously. The size of the steps they take will obviously depend on the ability of the student but if I'm doing my job, all students should be moving forward.

• Organ Scholar, Worcester College Oxford, MA (Music) Second Class Honours
• Associate of the Royal College of Music (Piano Teaching)
• Two years Postgraduate Study, Royal College of Music
