Jonathan - Barking tutor
Information About Jonathan:
Personal Description:
Hi - my name is Jonathan. I am a former primary school assistant headteacher, currently between jobs as I head towards a new role in initial teacher training. I therefore have plenty of availability in the coming autumn term to offer expert primary maths tuition for children heading towards 7+ or 11+ exams.
Between 2021 and 2024, I taught at a leading West London day school as a Year 4-6 maths specialist teacher. I therefore have a strong understanding of the independent school landscape across London and am confident in preparing children for the mathematical demands of these exams. I am very confident rapidly assessing pupils' current understanding and adapting my teaching to fill in any gaps before extending learning up the mathematical ladder.
Although exam preparation is key, I am always patient and positive, emphasising that it's great to spend time improving at maths anyway, with benefits far beyond any upcoming tests. I also have significant experience teaching children who find maths particularly challenging and have had good success in rebuilding knocked confidence and reigniting enjoyment of maths where it might have been lost.
Teaching Experience:
I have been a fully qualified teacher for over 10 years. I gained a maths specialist primary PGCE in 2016 and have continued to develop my expertise in primary maths ever since. I have been a KS1 class teacher in Hackney Central and Cairo, a KS2 maths specialist teacher at a top London day school and a lead practitioner working across EYFS, KS1 and KS2 in East London. Most recently I was Assistant Headteacher at the same school in Leyton, East London. In 2027 I will begin working for an initial teacher training provider in central London.
Tutoring Approach:
My sessions are friendly but focused, with a steady pace geared towards developing real understanding rather than simply a collection of set methods. I have a deep understanding of how learning happens in maths and when needed I can improvise the required activities or questions as sessions unfold. I also use plenty of puzzles and games to support children's engagement and help develop the reasoning and problem solving behaviours that are so important to real success in maths.
