Philip - Leamington Spa tutor
Information About Philip:
Personal Description:
I am a Head of Mathematics working in a Birmingham high school. Therefore I have vast experience of teaching mathematics, particularly at GCSE level, including the new specification. I am an Honours Graduate from Liverpool John Moores University (BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance), and I have completed an extensive Mathematics course at Liverpool Hope University. This provided me with the knowledge and ability to teach up to A-Level Mathematics, including all Core modules but also Mechanics, Statistics and Decision mathematics. I am an accredited One-to-One Tutor after successfully completing a tuition course, approved by the Teachers Development Agency, and I have been offering private tuition for a few years now. I have a full enhanced CRB (entitling me to work with children under 18), in place which can be produced upon request.
Teaching Experience:
I currently teach mathematics to GCSE level in a 'Good' C of E High School in Birmingham where I am Head of Mathematics. I have been providing one-to-one and small group turning on since 2009. This has been with pupils aged 11 and upwards. In my teaching career I have been closely linked to intervention groups to provide tuition style teaching, in terms of exam preparation, in order to help the pupils meet the grades that they are capable of. This has been for GCSE and A Level exams. I have also had experience of tutoring college students (studying various subjects) for help with assignments that have a mathematic element. Additionally, I have been employed by other schools, over school holidays, to tutor their under-performing exam pupils.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach to one-to-one tuition is always to begin with identifying the pupil's areas of strengths and weaknesses and using this information to set targets that are in-line with the aim of the tuition sessions. I like to offer a relaxed and friendly learning environment, where a good working relationship can be established. I aim to build the student's confidence in the subject and their ability. I always come well prepared to my lessons, with a variety of resources and teaching techniques along with personal learning objectives for each session. These strategies are used to enthuse, stimulate and educate the student in order to make the relevant progression for that individual. There is always a clear line of progression from one lesson to the next as well as an appropriate pace within each lesson. I have high expectations of all my students and always encourage a pupil to make the most out of every session and achieve the best they can.
