Personal Description:

I have been tutoring English since the 1990s. I have a Masters Degree in English from the University of Glasgow and I am continuing my research on Shakespeare. Publications include 'India in A Midsummer Night's Dream', in Shakespeare Survey 65 (Cambridge, 2012) and 'The Merchant of Venice', in Notes and Queries Vol. 61 (Oxford 2014).



Teaching Experience:

Since the 1990s, I have tutored at all SQA levels, including National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher; and for AQA /GCSE and A-level.

I cover all the main aspects in the SQA syllabus - close reading, essay writing for the portfolio (discursive / creative / personal / reflective), textual analysis, the film studies option for the Higher, the 8- and 10-mark question for the Scottish text, and the 5-mark comparative question for the close reading paper (Higher).

Drama: any Shakespeare play, including Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Othello, King Lear, Hamlet, Julius Caesar, Much Ado about Nothing, and The Merchant of Venice.

Any Arthur Miller play (Death of a Salesman, The Crucible, All My Sons, A View from the Bridge), Tennessee Williams (A Streetcar named Desire, The Glass Menagerie), Tally's Blood, Alan Spence (Sailmaker). An Inspector Calls (J.B. Priestly).

All Scottish poetry (Carol Ann Duffy, Norman MacCaig, Liz Lochhead, Robert Burns). All the main poetry set for GCSE/ AQA -John Donne, Byron, Shelley, Browning, Hardy, Wilfred Owen, etc. I am especially familiar with the main the poetry study guides, including "War and Conflict", "Love and Relationships" and "Unseen Poetry" (AQA).

Any novel acceptable for SQA/ AQA study, including: The Great Gatsby, The Handmaid's Tale (Margaret Atwood), Fahrenheit 451 (Ray Bradbury), To Kill a Mockingbird, Lord of the Flies, Catcher in the Rye, Of Mice and Men and The Pearl (John Steinbeck), The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Sunset Song, Animal Farm, The Old Man of the Sea, Jane Austen's novels, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Dracula and Frankenstein.

Short stories: Anne Donovan, "Hieroglyphics". Iain Crichton Smith. Orwell, "A Hanging"; John Updike, "A & P".

Films for SQA: Get Out, The Great Gatsby.

Whether for studying, for business or for leisure, my approach to English Language tuition is that it should be fun as well as instructive, varied and stimulating as well as methodical.
