Amanda - Boroughbridge tutor

Information About Amanda:

Personal Description:

I am a dynamic teacher who has previous experience of being a Forensic Scientist. I am, therefore, worldly-wise as well as academic-wise! I like visual and kinaesthetic learning and feel that subjects should be taught with all learning styles in mind. I have high expectations and teach' to the top' whilst maintaining student engagement. Real life situations and problem solving are key concepts; understanding WHY we learn and how knowledge and skills are life enhancing...

Teaching Experience:

I am in my 5th Year of teaching Year 5/6 (Upper KS2) at a high achieving primary school in North Yorkshire. SATs results generally run at 100% with a great proportion of these at Level 5 (overall English this Year was 83% L5; Maths TBC- always a similar result). I have a great deal of experience of formative (ongoing) assessment and identifying key weaknesses and to 'next steps' to progression. As it's such a high achieving school, I teach Gifted and Talented in both Numeracy and Literacy beyond L5 and so would be very comfortable tutoring KS3 (Years 7 & 8) in both subjects. Despite having an equal amount of passion for both subjects, I am Subject Leader for Literacy and am currently in charge of the school play which I have co-written, produced and will be directing.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching approach will be very child centred in terms of identifying individual needs and 'gaps' in learning which are preventing further progression. Although I favour a kinaesthetic approach to teaching, I feel that the child, as a learner, needs to be able to apply a methodology to problems and will therefore be encouraged to write too. Children who are booked for a number of sessions will be expected to do a little homework in between, which will then be self assessed according to agreed criteria. I also believe that the child needs to be aware of what is being expected of them at all times.

I have offered the 'adult' teaching primarily to parents who would like to be tutored in exactly what is taught within the new Primary Frameworks for Literacy and Numeracy. This will enable parents to help their own children without confusing them with possibly obsolete or confusing methodology.
