Emily - Northampton tutor
Information About Emily:
Personal Description:
Hello! My name is Emily, I have just finished a BSc in English Language at Aston University and will be starting work as a Teaching Assistant in Year One in September as I hope to train as a Primary School teacher in the coming years. I have plenty of experience in teaching and working with children, and am hugely passionate about my subject.
Teaching Experience:
- I regularly volunteer at my local primary school, and have done for the past 4-5 years. Last year I volunteered full-time for three months there, working 1:1 with a Year One pupil with severe learning difficulties.
- I have also spent time volunteering at a Sure Start Children's Centre, working with children aged 0-5 during play sessions.
- I worked full-time for a year at a secondary school as a Learning Support Assistant, where I worked both 1:1 and with small groups of pupils with learning difficulties. This also included teaching English to a small group of Year Seven pupils.
- I have also worked as a Private Tutor for a year, working with pupils in Year One, Year Nine and Year Eleven, working on English Language and English Literature. In particular, one pupil improved their grades from a D to a B.
Tutoring Approach:
I feel that the most important thing to remember is that each learner is individual and has their own way of learning. There is no set formula for teaching a subject, as each learner will work at their own pace in their own style. My initial sessions are often based around simply getting to know the learner, as I find sessions are more productive when a learner feels more comfortable around me. I also think it is important to give each learner a say in the direction and material of the sessions - tutoring is a 2 way process, designed to build on and practice on material and skills set by the learner's school/college etc. and due to the limited time-frame of the sessions it is important that the learner and I work together to achieve the best for the learner.
